I'm using an acrylic latex paint for my living room and hallway. Of course it's coming out darker than I expected, but I still love the color. The problem is that the first coat looks very uneven to me. I did ask if I needed to prime the walls first and was told it wasn't necessary. All the walls in the house are white so there wasn't any color to paint over.

Will the second coat even things out?

You may need to do 2-3 to sometimes 4 coats to get a darker color to come out even. You wouldn't need to primer unless you are using a light color on a dark surface. It also may depend on the type of instrument you're using to apply it. Paintbrushes can leave strokes, sponges don't come out well at all. Usually a really good roller (and I'm not talking your dollar store variety) would be the best to use.

Yes, the second coat should even things out. Alot of times the first one looks uneven because you didn't have the same anount of paint on your roller or brush each time you did a line. A second coat will take care of that.

Really, you don't have a lot of choice than to just put the second coat on, ya know?

try rolling your paint one way then the other, but you will need a second coat to prove up the finish. even if white is your base it shows through in places to make it appear streaked or lined.
happy painting

It may be you used a paint with less pigment.Thats the difference in paint quality. You have to do more coats with less pigmented paint.

let the paint dry completely before making your judgment. most one coat paints don't cover in one coat. The second one should be fine.
