My German shepherd puppy is in her first heat cycle, and we planned to have her neutered. Do we have to wait until the heat cycle is over?

SIGH. A dog of either sex can be "neutered", people!

Look it up.

Neutering simply means to render incapable of breeding by surgically removing reproductive organs--the testes in males, the ovaries and uterus in females. The male is castrated, the female is spayed.

She CAN be spayed while she is in season, but it is a more major surgery because eveything is swollen with blood. Most vets will charge more and there is a higher risk. If you can, it is better to wait until her season is over, then have her spayed.

Some vets won't spay a female in heat because there can be more complications as you stated. Some will. But, you can safely wait until she's no longer in heat by keeping her separated from your male dog. It's really not that difficult. Even if she should mate with your male - go forward with the spay a day or two after she's completed her cycle and it should go well. It takes a while for puppies to develop, so you won't be aborting anything other than a little protoplasm if they did breed.

A female dog can be spayed while in heat but you are better off waiting. Some vets charge more if a pup is in heat the reason being that there is an increased risk of bleeding during the surgery if she is in heat. Though you will have to carefully watch your pup so she doesn't hook up with any males you would be better off waiting until after she completes her heat cycle then having her spade. Discuss this with your vet.

Female dogs can't be neutered, but they can be spayed ;)
It's best to wait until the heat cycle is over. Just keep an eye on her and keep her away from any unaltered male dogs.

A female dog can never be neutered! If you are wanting to know if she can be spayed, then yes. The procedure is a bit more risky when she is in heat do to the increased blood flow to the uterine horns. It may also be a bit more expensive, but you can do it.

If it's a female, she gets spayed not neutered. (Just so you don't confuse the vet office and ask for a neutering)

Physically she could be spayed during the heat but my understanding is that the reproductive organs swell and the vets prefer not to do it at this time. But I am no vet...why not call your vet ofce and ask?

It is impossible to neuter a female anything! If she is just coming in to heat she can still be spayed. Otherwise, you have to wait until she is done!

Most vets want you to wait until after the heat cycle. (it's cheaper then also) keep her away from ALL unalterd male dog for 3 wks.

And for future reference, females get SPAYED, males get NEUTERED.

A female dog can be spayed even if she's in heat, the vet might charge you more for the procedure.
