YES! But the pain is worth it and actually isn't that bad after a while. Make sure you get something that you are willing to live with for life. I suggest designing your own and really do some research on the tatoo artist. A good tatoo will not be cheap. Good luck!

It depends mainly on where you have it done, but it ranges from mildly uncomfortable to Oh My God Why Are You Hurting Me Like This? Your hands, feet and neck are the most painfull places to have it done, and after that, where the skin is thinner or it is over the bone. The outline is more painfull, kinda like someone rubbing your skin with a scouring pad, and the 'colouring in' is a little less painfull. I have 3 tattoos, 2 on my back an one on my foot. The 2 on my back, at the base of my spine, took about 3 1/2 hours in total (two different sittings) and the one on my foot took 15 minutes. The one on my back was fine, but when I had the one on my foot done, I had to physically hold my foot down, to stop myself pulling it away out of pain! It really hurt afterwards, as well, as the foot swelled up quite badly. (The skin is very thin there, and I have really bony feet!) But don't let the pain factor put you off, if you really want one, get a small one first, see how you go. The pain only lasts a little while and you will be so thrilled with the result you forget the pain really quickly!

If you are not sure maybe you shouldnt get one just yet.
The pain of having a tattoo done is not as bad as people think. But i wouldnt suggest having one at the bottom of your back to start with as its one of the more painful places to have one done.
I think of having a tattoo like a *** burn its hot and sharp or like a cat scratch. However once the needle leaves your skin the burning stops right away.
After a few minutes your adrenaline kicks in anyway so you dont feel too much after that.
If you go for a tattoo make sure you eat before you go and take a lolly pop or fizzy drink with you to keep your blood sugar up so you dont feel ill if you are nervous. Plus the lolly gives you something to bite if you do find it painful.
If you have had a body piercing you can certainly handle tattoos as although the pain lasts longer where they have to draw, i find actual piercing more painful.
Go to a tattoo parlour and speak to the tattooist thats the best thing. and you might see someone go in and come out after having a tattoo. see what its like ask how it went. you will get a better idea and if you have time to know your tattooist then it makes things more relaxed for you.

Pends on your pain threshold really! Lots of myths about some places hurting more than others and the more fat etc. You can get cream that numbs area to reduce the pain like they use before a general anaesthetic but at the end of the day as someone else has said it is a needle! I found the itching after when it went scabby more difficult than the pain of having it done though! Just needed to itch and couldn't!! Good luck if you go for it!

It hurts but since the needle is going in 1000x/min it doesn't hurt that bad. It's more of a light, localized burning sensation.

What you could do is get the outline done then request that the artist apply spray or rub on lidocaine whih will cut the pain considerably

If you smoke weed than toke up beforehand because that really takes the edge off. You could also take some tylenols an hour beforehand but that would be the p*ssy's way out.

It depends on where you get it and how much detail. They, whoever that is, say that the less fat the more it hurts. I will tell you that the outline hurts more than the shading, I think most can agree with that. did get a small tattoo on my ankle that took 5 minutes, I have no fat there and I hardly felt a thing.

So figure out what you want, how detailed it is going to be, what your tolerance for pain is and think about if you are truly willing to go through with it.

Anything less than a couple of inches is not big deal. It stings a little, but the pain is very temporary and not that bad at all.

Just make sure you are getting it for the right reasons. They are FOREVER. It'll only cost you a few bucks to get one, but thousands to have it removed...and it will be a lot more painful and will never be fully gone.

If you're old enough, go get an adult beverage before you go. Just make sure you pick out the tatoo BEFORE you drink. ;) And don't drink too much. Just enough to take the edge off.

I posted this on another question asking about tattoos and pain:

The pain is pretty subjective. I thought I was a tough broad, but the tattoo hurt like hell! And it's a sustained pain for as long as you have to sit (depending on how large the tattoo is). I only sat for an hour but it felt like 12. Anyway, it feels like a cat scratch. The worst part is the outlining. My artist outlined in a thin line and then went over it in a thicker line and then went over it in color. My poor leg was so raw.

If you do decide to get one, and although it hurt very, very, very bad, I do recommend it, be sure to go to the best artist in your area. This is permanent and worth spending a lot of cash on. Be sure to look at his/her prior artwork. Ask how long they have been in business and tattooing. And always, always, always ask about sterilization. (I included a link to Dave's shop - the guy who did my tattoo.)

Oh, and it's a good thing to get one in an area that can be easily covered up (i.e. upper leg, butt, lower back, belly, bikini area). Employers are not always fans of cool tattoos.

Good luck!! And have fun!

When I was younger I wanted a tattoo but I am really glad I didn't get one. Tattoo's are for life and you can age people by their tattoos because of the certain designs. They will soon go out of fashion, and in a year or two you will be pleased you didn't. Get a little transfer instead.
