To tip the Stanley Steemer guy? I thought he did a great job and so I tipped him 10%, but now I don't know if I was stingy, or if it's even expected...What do you think?

I tip anyone that does a service for me, whether it's delivering flowers, the paper, etc.
It might not be expected by the Stanley Steemer guy but why not reward someone for great service? After all, they have just saved me the time and aggravation of doing it myself. If it were the guy's own cleaning business then a tip would not be necessary (you usually don't tip the owner of a business - that's what business gifts are for).

Stanley Steemer offers a service, so you tip as it is customary in your area. 15% before taxes, or 10% after taxes is common. Many people do not tip at all. The most important is the gratitude you expressed. If you want to do more, write a testimonial letter to the local branch of the company and to the head office. Everybody likes to feel appreciated.

It's not actually customary or expected. But since you were pleased and wanted to show it, I'm sure it was a nice and appropriate gesture.

It's not actually customary, but whenever you get good service, it is good manners to do such, and 10% is the norm.

I've never tipped the carpet guy. Never even thought about it.

OMG... I would NEVER EVER EVER DREAM of tipping the carpet cleaner guy -- he makes his money by showing up to work. It isn't like a waiter where they are paid less than minimum wage and depend on their service to earn their income! You are a much more generous person than I.

I think 10% was really appreciated because most people do not tip them so they were probably pleased and suprised. I agree with you- when you're happy with something you should reward the good worker.
