When I was deployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Storm we were not allowed to have alcohol either. However one of my buddies father sent him a bottle of Jack Daniels about once a week. He just packed the bottle with snacks, magazines, toilet paper, sodas, etc and there was never a problem. Like you said is was a luxury in a very nasty place!

Hey honey,

Don't do it, he can get in way too much trouble then it's worth. If I was you, I'd get a bottle of his favorite kind 'booze', take a photo of you holding it & say something like can't wait for you to get home. But then again that could just be cruel. He'll only be gone 7 months, it's not too long to stay sober for.

My man's there too, it's hard. Things I've been sending, lots of baked goods, and he loves it. cd, video of you & his family saying hi and stuff. Pictures, their water is gross so anything that they can mix in it to make it taste better is a big hit, (my guy likes Kool-aid, gross), Lemonade mixes are big anything in small easily carried containers is good. My boyfriend and I exchange journals. Both of us write in it every day we can. We have 4 journals, he has one I have one & we both have one on the way to the other. When we get the new one we mail the one we've been writing in out. It has really helped us feel connected cause as I'm sure you know they can't always call us & talk to us on the phone. Pretty much anything you can think of to distract him. I've also sent, books, cd's, football, Frisbee, cards...and other things that I know he'll like so far he's loved everything I've sent. So that’s some ideas for you.

Take Care, God bless! And hopefully the time will pass before you know it!!!!

Shampoo bottles make it taste nasty - listerine and food colouring is fine - as you have seen. I think the USA must be very strict about alcohol. Lots of the UK soldiers have a two can (toucan) rule. I know someone who used to get multi-pack boxes of crisps (chips) - some of the crisp bags in the middle had minatures sellotaped to them!

I don't understand why some of these guys are getting so uptight - they must realise that no squaddie worth his salt would drink "in action" - but guys do get time out.

Other ideas - toiltetries - nice ones, photographs, cds, dvds, remember chocolate and sweets melt which is dissapointing, if you get a couple of cheap MP3 players - you can send him music on one, when he gets it he sends the other one back, then carry on doing this, changing the music each time. Socks, underwear and tee-shirts help too! Best wishes.

You could try sending it in a well washed out shampoo bottle I've done this before now

I'm sure he'd appreciate some chocolate and some photos of you for his bunk.

Keep writing regularly. even stuff you might think is boring is a link to home. That's the most important thing

Hope he keeps safe, and you look after yourself too I know how hard it can be ...............
xx

Alcohol is contraband in Iraq no matter what country you're from. Just respect the rules and he can have his drink when he returns home safely. There is no disguising it....mail from all countries is randomly searched.

I suggest instead of telling people to chill out, that you just respect the rules of the land. If you do send it, you deserve to be caught. Everyone else goes without and so can he.

I have no problem with thees boys getting porn and alcohol and pork products but the government tries to respect the laws of the country the soldiers are in. If they get banned material and are caught with it more than once they are no longer allowed to receive ANY mail, at all. That would really suck.

Dont do what my mother did when i was in the first gulf war and that was to send me a dressing gown (in the desert) went straight in the bin. We used to nick apples from the cookhouse... buy some local powdered squash.. sugar.. bit of yeast.. boomshanker..hooch. Watch it doesnt explode whilst fermenting. Hope your man has a quiet time.

the first thing to do is make sure he wants you to send it. i know some one who got some jack and tryed to send it back and got into trouble. all mail going into iraq is not checked. only the mail going back to the us. so just use some socks so they dont break.

and to the answer at the end no the government can not deny you mail.

Don't worry about it. I've heard at least three different ways they're making alcohol with what they already have. It won't be long before he learns too, even if he never does it.

If he gets caught with it (either made there or sent by you), he's in serious trouble.

Just send the ALLOWED items he likes here at home - but in small quantities.
