By numbers... the Moisan-Nagant (Russian bolt-action rifle) with about 37 million produced

For the USA - the M-1 Garand: the first generally issued and BEST semi-automatic rifle produced. Number built 5.4 million approximately, and used thru Korea.

Just FYI, the M-14 wasn't introduced until 1957... after the Korean War... and it is basically an M-1 Garand chambered to fire a NATO 7.62mm round and adding a detachable clip

It was a WORLD WAR remember.
Ever nation had it's own most used gun in WW II.
For the US it was the M1 Garand followed closely by the model 1911 45cal pistol.
For the British it was the Enfield rifle
For the Germans it was the Mouser
For the Russians it was the TOKAREV AVT-40

this is a double sided question... obviously squads had specialtys like snipers who where outfitted with springfield rifles and BAR rifle operaters who obviously had a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) but for the regular rifle man it offically named the M1 although it was known by most know as the M1 Garrand after its maker. Now officers where the only ones allowed to have Thomson Machine gun
and they prefered it over the M1 because of its immese firepower (as compared to other weapons back then, it was the only handheld gun capable of machine gun capabilitys in that era.)
some stats on the guns
M1 Garrand- Type: Semi-automatic
Weight: it weighed about eight pounds standard but it could be outfitted with various equipment like a grenade launcher so it varied
Clip Capacity: I believe it held 5... or was it 8? check on that one
Stock Material: wood to heavy the gun to dampen the heavy recoil
Thompson- Weight: about five or six pounds
Clip Capacity: it came in three sizes the 20 round banana clip the 50 round drum or the 100 round drum the most common was the 20 round clip

so thats your info on the most common guns in World War Two (when the soldiers had a choice)
This is the american guns for the other countrys it was
Russia: Mosin Nagant
Germany: mp40
thats all it can think of off the top of my head

that is such a broad question, I'd have to say Sten Mark II, the British had to rebound to it after the Americans stopped handing them the Thompson. It was easier to produce and the British made some 2 million of them...
