It seems to me that I'm going through life's motions. I'm sure this question has been asked before. I hate my life but I'm too lazy (or scared) to do anything about it so I do the same crap every single day. I have no idea where I'll be in 5 years.

I think that a strong majority of all types of people have gone through this stage in their lives, although to different degrees.

Right now I'm sad to say that I'm in about the same place as you are, regarding emotions.

Mahatma Gandhi famously said "Be the change you want to see in the world", and I am slowly and painfully trying to make that my personal motto and daily practice.

I know this is easier said than done, but the change you want in your life has to come from inside you, because I believe we are all born with everything necessary inside of us, it's just a matter of bringing it out and using it for the betterment of ourselves and society.

man, i'd be depressed as hell if i knew where i was going to be in 5 years.

life is all about one thing: pursuit of happiness. every human being lives and dies. no avoiding it. so you have to cherish life while you have it. everything that you want, you want it because it will make you happy, right?

so decide what you need to be happy, and pursue it. here's one exercise i often advise:

take a piece of paper. make three columns. column a = things that make you happy. anything from sunrises, to burritos, to the smell of cut grass, adventuring, sleeping, whatever. be as literal or figurative as you like. clumn b = things that make you sad. column c = things you need/want BUT DONT HAVE to make you happy.

now, work on increasing the amount of items from column A in your life. try to cut things from column B out of your life. then figure out what you can do to obtain things from column C, and go for it!

you are the master of your own destiny, as cheesy as it sounds.

let me give you an example:
i'm 22. i've been working the same desk job, 8am-5pm, mon-fri, for the last 4.5 years, since i graduated high school. it pays ok, and i have a future with the company. this could be a lifelong career, which would pay well. i have a steady girlfriend, and some close friends. i work during the day, party during the weekends, play video games and read in my spare time. overall, a very average life. nothing wrong with it.

but i hate it. i'm so bored. i feel like i haven't had a significant thought or emotion in years. i feel like i'm wasting the best part of my life (my youth!) by just drifting along, another consumer, another working class joe.

i love travelling though. whenever i arrive in a new country, or state, or even city, i love the feeling of exploration and new-ness. after graduation, i spent 2 months just backpacking and wandering around europe. those were literally the best days of my life so far.

so yesterday, i turned in my two week notice. i broke it off with my girlfriend three days ago. i bought a new sleeping bag, a hiking backpack, a bivvy sack, and a couple other travel minutae. on december 1st, i'm heading out east hitchhiking. i'm gonna sleep wherever nightfall finds me, i'm gonna eat whatever food i can scrounge/find/catch, and i'm gonna take each day as it comes. i'm going to live the adventure to its fullest. i know there are going to be cold, lonely nights, just as i know there are going to be beautiful days, amazing new sights, friends made along the way, and more.

and if i should die in 2 months, at least i died doing what i loved. i will have died fulfilling my dream. i'd rather do that than drone on mindlessly and miserably.

You only go around this merry-go-round once. Today is important but so is the future. Ask yourself where you want to be in 5 years, 10 years. You don't want to be looking back regretting not having done what you could have done.
