help needed, i am starting a painting and decorating job next week, and the coustomer has removed all the wallpaper and the old polystyrene tiles of the ceiling, and i need to know whats the quickest and easiest way to remove the old adhesive of the ceiling where the tiles were.

with all due respect, don't sand!, until you know what the product is that your sanding is....
asbestos is a problem and the old stuff used long ago was loaded with it.
one avenue is to cover it and not disturb it. trawl on joint compound and smooth somewhat, then with a heavy napped roller, paint the surface as you were in the first place.
the folks may enjoy a rough or brocade look.
easy and less troublesome

i had to do this at work once its hard work 1st goggles and face mask a must then get a stiff scrapper and remove adhesive and yes this will cause damage to your ceiling but when you have removed it all get a big box of filler and skim the ceiling then rub smooth good luck i no how hard it is

sanding is the answer, but, why not skim it with mud, or just spray over it.
