I have a great dress to wear to a Black Tie event. The dress is a two piece. The first piece being a long a-line skirt and the second being a sleeveless and strapless top that zips up the back. Problem is I wore the dress in a wedding 1.5 years ago and the seemstress really took it in so it was tight. Now, maybe 5 lbs heavier, its still tight. I am getting dressed at the hotel with some other attendees. I will have to ask one of ladies to zip my dress knowing the top is going to be a doozy to zip around my hips/lovehandle area. I am already wearing a form fitter..it helps little. Is it ok to ask? If so, how? What do I say? Should I worry about being embarrassed?

Women are used to being asked things like this and 99% of us won't think twice about helping.

No way! Nothing to be embarrassed about! I think almost all women have experienced this with their dresses before, I know I have and I usually ask my husband to zip it up for me. Just ask nicely "Excuse me? I'm really sorry to inconvenience you, but do you mind if I ask you to zip up my dress for me, as I am having trouble getting my hand all the way up my back?" Have fun at the event! Sounds very classy!

Totally don't worry about it -- just ask one of the ladies to assist you into your second set of skin... its simply too tight to do on your own! Then give a little laugh and any woman will help you (even I would help and I'm not known for being all that nice!).

This is completely normal and I imagine you will be helping other strangers zipping up their dresses as well. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. Just suck it in and tell her to yank. If you have a sense of humor about it you may just make a friend. If it is just too much to handle, they have zipper helpers that attach so you can pull it up your self.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with asking another woman (politely, of course) to help you with an article of clothing, especially in the type of setting you describe.
Have fun!

If its a black tie event do you think such a dress is actually appropriate to wear? Just a thought.

No reason why they won't do it for you. It's a very small favor to ask.
