When buying a used car, the reputation of the seller is most important. A good used Honda will hold it's value and run a long time without trouble. When buying the car, be prepared to walk away from any deal that is not in your favor. Set a secret "maximum price" that you will pay and don't go over that. If you fall in love with a car you don't own, you will pay too much for it.

You will likely be worked over by the salesman and sales manager who will play games to get you to pay more than you want. Hold firm. They need you more than you need them.

While negotiating on the vehicle, make sure you understand all the charges and fees that they might add. I would not personally pay any dealer an add-on fee for doing the paperwork. Also get every agreement in writing if something is promised. Never buy the extra warranty. The seller has all the cards and will not sell you an extra warranty that is good for you and bad for them. Extra warranties are a big money-maker for the dealer.

What year Civic. I assume you mean a 2006 as that isn't many miles, but I don't know. =) Also what trim, dx, lx, ex, etc...

My main advice is to bring a friend that knows auto finance with you. Dealership finance guys are normally crooks in the worst kind of way. A local dealerships finance trainer tells his students to be "the wolf in sheep's clothing."

Have someone come with you that can look at the paperwork and tell you how much of the cost is going into his pockets... normally they will try to pocket just about all of your down payment, so look into it carefully.

Go to the Edmund's car site- they have all kinds of info on pricing. Or go look for the Kelly Blue Book- you enter all the details- mileage, yr, body condition, options (stereo, ac, transmission) and they give you the cost to buy, and how much you can sell it for, either to a private party or as a trade in for a new vehicle.
