You can leave butter out but if you leave it out it will only last 2 or 3 days at the most after which time it will go rancid.
The experts say When it comes to butter, forget the door — it's simply too warm. Instead, keep your stick in a covered butter dish on a top or middle shelf. In the same area, keep cheese tightly sealed in foil or plastic wrap.
Homemade peanut butter should be refrigerated in tightly-sealed containers and ideally used within a couple of weeks. Turn the container upside-down occasionally to help redistribute the oils.Commercial varieties require no refrigeration, can be kept up to six months after opening. Unopened jars can be stored up to one year.
Jelly after it is opened is to be stored in the refrigerator because after it is open bacteria feeds on the sugar.

I keep the butter out almost all of the time.It never went bad on me. Jelly I keep in the fridge.Peanut butter in the cabinet unless it's the natural kind. Butter and peanut butter get too hard to spread if it's always in the fridge. I never had anything go bad except once the jelly did when it was left in the cabinet. It got all runny and started growing things. I rarely use jelly.

Well if it takes you over a month to eat a stick of butter it's probably better left in the fridge. But if you eat it regularly it is fine to leave out. A few weeks ago I looked up the question about PB on the web. If the PB seperates the oil can go rancid but it is fine to leave in the cabinet. Jelly (when opened) should be left in the fridge as the sugar can invite bacteria when left out a room temp.

Butter won't spoil out of the fridge it will last just as long in or out of the fridge. As for jelly I don't think it will last in the cupboard I would put it in the fridge. And peanut butter in the fridge is weird I usually put that in the cupboard so it seems to me like your hubby has a few things backwards.

My grandfather ALWAYS insisted his "butter" be on the table in a butter dish, while my gradmothers "margarin" was always put in the fridge (because the margarin will seperate). Also, I have heard of some people putting peanut butter in the fridge but never jelly on the shelf. I do the opposite. Hope this helps a bit!

Butter will eventually go rancid at room temp, but it does take a while.
In regards to the PB & J; PB in the cabinet, jelly in the fridge.
