I just rescued an abandoned kitten about a week ago. She's been confirmed a female and her health appears to be excellent. I'm retired living on Social Securtiy disability. She'll never go without love or food or a place to stay. I'm just concerned about affording the expenses of shots, and more importantly getting her spayed when the time is right. My fixed income is my only shortcoming when it comes to her medical needs. Can someone offer me some advice? Desperate father/mother wanting to keep his new pet.

Go to the following website, sponsored by the North Shore Animal League America. The site should direct you to some low-cost options. I know that S.N.A.P. offers discounted certificates to spay or neuter and they will tell you which veterinarians accept the certificates.

You are wonderful for rescuing the kitten and trying to keep it. Lucky kitty! I wish you all the best.

There is only one way to spay a cat, and that is surgery. Sorry. I would recommend distemper and rabies shots. They are only once a year after her first year. Some vets are different but some give a 3 year Rabies vaccination. The distemper shot is to keep her from getting sick with a cold, somewhat like a flu shot for us. Keep her inside until you can afford to have her spayed. Call around and find the cheapest spot. You may have to wait longer but this gives you time to save up a little. This is a one time procedure that must be done unless you want to hear her tell you about it every four to 6 months. Believe me if you haven't heard or seen a female in heat you don't want to. Don't buy the cheapest cat food, they have to eat more and it is very fatty. Purina is not expensive and is a good choice. Good luck. Oh, just for your info all cat spays are total hysterectomies where they take all the female organs.

There are many cat rescue organizations who would be able to point you in the direction of a kind and affordable vet. In the area I live, they come to all the pet stores to showcase the kitties they have for adoption. I recently found a kitten as well, and they were very helpful to me when I asked them for advice.

Also, you can go into your local animal shelter and ask them if they have any programs for neutering and vaccination assistance. There are often discount vouchers and special programs that seniors and people with low income can get for their pets.

In our area of northern KY, the Humane Society sells coupons for discounted spaying / neutering. Most area vets accept the coupons. The only thing is they are only sold once a year. I think its around Valentines day. I'd call the local office & ask. If they don't participate, they may be able to suggest something in your area.

Enjoy your new little girl! Sounds like she's loved very much!

Female cats get spayed, It's required surgery because the vet will remove the ovaries, or uterus or sometimes just tie the tubes. Contact a vet in your area and ask if they know of any low cost spay/neuter clinics. If they don't know of any, contact a shelter in your area and ask the same questions.

Sometimes vets hold clinics for people on fixed incomes to have their pets spayed/neutered and shots. Check with your local shelter and vet's offices to see if and when they have these. Good luck!

As everyone else has said, your local SPCA has discount services for people who qualify. Petco and PetSmart do to, although they are a little higher than the other programs, they are much cheaper than the vet! Congrats on your new kitty.

If you can't afford to spay your cat, you need to find it a new home. I know it hurts, but it is for the best. If she doesn't get spayed, she could get pregnant. Even if she doesn't, female cats are HORRIBLE when they're in heat. They are loud and agressive.

Also, if you can't afford to get her spayed, what will happen if she actually gets really sick?

Humane societies do do spaying. It is less expensive than the bet, but nowhere near free.

Check your vet's office for organizations like "The Big Fix" they only charge like, 20 bucks, or so.
