The money is not wasted because e.g. the most important factor for our weather and climate are variations in the sun. Any research on solar activities help understand and possibly solve climate problems.

The most troublesome problem on our planet is the behaviour of the human race. I would suggest that money spent on re-educating 5+ billion people is way more of a waste than trying to understand our planet using an outside perspective, i.e. a view from space.

Besides: there is lots of cheap fusion energy to be had in space, simply put up mirrors where no atmosphere or clouds interfere. Getting it down to earth without causing lots of heat will be a technological challenge that can be solved. Offering virtually limitless amounts cheap energy will alter current economics in a way that lots of suffering can be avoided. So: spaceward ho!

For the same reason we waste time and money on football, music, art, nuclear physics, all kinds of basic science and so on. It is because we as people cannot always be preoccupied with our daily needs, no matter how pressing they are. And because it is our future. If we never even try to learn and do new things, we are not living, we are just surviving.

The average person is FAR better off today, suffering less than he would have hundreds of years ago, and it is all because people worked on things that, at the time, seemed like just amusing diversions with no practical value, like electricity and microbiology.

Coz we have to have somewhere to go when the earth turns to pot. Anyway...there are people focusing on the problems of earth. Why not let others explore the unknown? It could also lead to the discovery of something that could help solve problems here...you never know.

Your GPS that you love so much was designed for space exploration. The Velcro you love to use - space - your cell phone is based on technology designed to communicate with the Apollo missions - water separation systems that clean water you drink was designed first for astronauts - TANG )IE meaning dehydrated and preserved food) was designed by General Foods for the boys in the sky - The Anti Lock brakes you enjoy on your car were designed first for the space shuttle. - I could keep going but you will find MANY of the day to day things we use in life were designed because we needed then in space exploration.

Possibly the answer can be out there...just a possibility, although we do have major problems with our planet, we can't deny researchers to explore the rest of the universe. Then we as earthling's would be limiting ourselves

Because that's what we do; we're explorers. It seems to be hard-wired into our DNA.

NASA's annual budget is about $16 billion. We're spending that much every two *months* in Iraq. Perhaps we need to look at all our priorities.

Many hope that after we have irresponsibly destroyed this planet and all of its resources we can jump ship to another to secure the survival of **** sapiens. Oh, and some of it is curiosity.
