Tried Limewire but found connection took ages towards after a while.

All of them have their drawbacks which are purposely built in to induce you to "upgrade" to the pay version. The best of all evils that I've found is Limewire; your connection problems could have more to do with your system than Limewire; I've never had connection problems with them. You could try Bear Share, but I found connection problems with them! So, go figure; it could have to do with location.

the safest bet is bittorrent .. you will find more "whole" albums though and not single mp3 downloads using bittorrent ... limewire is ok for singles but if you dont have much experience your machine will be hacked and you'll be crawling with bugs in a short time .. sites like limewire are where all the script kiddies hang out and learn how to write viruses and test them on you ...

WHOA WAIT A SECOND, limewire and bearshare both are packed with spyware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF you want one that does not give spyware, as the guy said above, use MORHEUS...

limewire. Unlike all the rest out there, it doesn't automatically install adware on your computer (or at least it didn't use to, when I downloaded it but who knows if that has changed)

Shareaza, BearShare, Morpheus, Ares. They are all good. LimeWire is the best though.
