Us. Now our spiritual leaders (e.g., the Pope) must tend to our spiritual well-being.

1. We are the sheep, Jesus was referring to.
2. Peter took charge of the flock, and this responsibility has passed from pope to pope until today, there now sits: pope Benedict XVI. This unbroken string applies to our lives as a foundation to build or keep ones faith alive in. As everything has been recorded, and access is available, one can see humanity ebb and flow and grow. We used to think one way now we think another, due to growth, (and the Holy Spirit of GOD of course).
Personally I do not like being a sheep, but you can not herd cats, and when trying to get people to work together for tomorrow ideas and morals that are easy to understand make this easier. Today more people are urban than rural so the parables would be different, but the message and ideas would be the same.

The sheep Jesus was talking about are his followers. Peter was one of the first Pastors. Pastors are called today to take care of Jesus sheep. That is Jesus Followers.

Jesus is talking about loyalty: Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God. St Peter will guard Jesus to the point of cutting off Malkos' ear at the Garden of Gethsamame/ St Peter denied Christ 3x but repented: so they say, he cried like a river that in some of his statues, it shows sort of aa canal under his eyes. Jesus need His Agent in earth in the person of St Peter, due to his qualities... loyal and forgiving. St John was a very young man at that time.

"My sheep" are those who have believed and trusted in Jesus. Jesus was speaking to Peter about the believers of the time. But the message is true for all who would care for Believers.

His followers. Which is interesting, because an awful lot of his followers don't appear to have watched a flock of sheep, animals that are LITERALLY incapable of turning left if their leader hasn't turned left. Not how I want to be spoken of by an all-loving parent, as a sheep that needs to be led because I can't think for myself.

Blessed be!

When Jesus "ordered" Peter to "..tend my sheep.." he was talking about mankind. All those alive and serving him at that time and those to come in the future. Peter cannot be with us to tend Jesus' sheep now so the "men of God" should take up the place of Peter. Jesus also said "..feed my sheep.." That means to feed them the "Word of Life" or the scriptures. Any so called man of God who strays from God's Word (Bible) when teaching or feeding God's flock are in danger of hell fire and disobeyed Jesus' command to "feed His sheep". this includes those who have altered God's Word and added their own religious books to the Bible. these teachings are like a smorgasboard with tads of poison in it.

Jesus was known as the good shepherd and referred to his followers as his flock. He was asking Peter to take over his job as shepherd. Not an easy task by any means.
