Opportunity galore. When they got off the ship at Ellis Island everything looked newly constructed, clean and functional. They had heard the stories from other relatives and friends and when they hit land and got through immigration and were met by friends or relatives, the truth of the greatness of America was greater than ever imagined. The photographs of people getting down and kissing the land was so true.

As for what they did not like, many ethnicities, religions and other obvious "markers" of coming to America from far off, were met with discrimination and many had a hard time overcoming the road blocks, including neighborhoods that were overcrowded and teeming with the poor of their own kind. The Irish, Catholic, Italian, Gypsy, so on and so forth, was merely a cultural thing to be overcome and it was. That is ancient history. Americans have always welcomed legal immigrants because good people and good people and because we all have ancestors that came here as legal immigrants. Bless this country.

I'll answer your exact question but as for Canada.

What they didn't like:
-the cold and long winters
-leaving everything they had back home; some family, friends, leaving their lifestyles and basically having to start from ZERO
-not being with their own people
-facing RACISM
-finding jobs and having to go through exploitation
-trying to instaure a bit of their culture and heritage in a land where ignorance was bliss and where the people were just not informed at all

What they liked:
-After going through: (hell) the war/economical problems in their countries/famine/corruption ( just to name a few) finally being in a land where it was stable living brought a lot of peacefullness
-Having food and an ''ok'' place to live in
-Work opportunities
-Being able to get a good education
-After a few years getting everything in place, always working hard but knowing that you left your own country for a better place, in the end...

To immigrate, they sacrificed a lot, and that's what made/makes them so courageous

Immigrants came for many, many, different reasons. Some came over due to religious persecution. Some come as refugees as victims from a war. Some came for better opportunities for employment, since the economy in their home country was a disaster. Some for a better standard of living for them and their children.

The same applies for the reason they don't like America. Wherever they come from, they bring their cultural prejudices as well. Some didn't want to integrate with American culture and preferered to keep their own community and identity. Some were victims of racism and either violence or job discrimination against them.

I'd suggest reading more about this subject if you are interested, because there are too many things to list in a single post.

The liked the fact that they were here and the rest of the Europeans were over there with an ocean between them.

I don't think they cared too much for the harsh winters.
