that vaccinating against HPV is going to cause women to become promiscuous, do they really have that little faith in their parenting skills, to think that a vaccination will erase everything they have taught their daughters? Isn;t it better to vaccinate and be safer then to ignore the reality of the danger of cervical cancer?

First, I want to thank you for bringing up the vaccine in a public forum. It never ceases to amaze me how many parents have not heard of this vaccination. Second, I just wanted to clear up the misperceptions of the HPV vaccine....

1.) Why aren't boys being vaccinated? Because we don't yet know if the vaccine is effective in boys or men. Studies are now being done to find out if the vaccine works to prevent HPV infection and disease in males. When more information is available, this vaccine may be licensed and recommended for boys/men as well.

2.) Why vaccinate girls? Ideally, females should get the vaccine before they are sexually active. This is because the vaccine is most effective in girls/women who have not yet acquired any of the four HPV types covered by the vaccine. Girls/women who have not been infected with any of those four HPV types will get the full benefits of the vaccine. If they're already sexually active, the vaccine may be less effective, especially if they've already been exposed. Studies have found the vaccine to be almost 100% effective in preventing diseases caused by the four HPV types covered by the vaccine– including precancers of the cervix, vulva and vagina, and genital warts. The vaccine has mainly been studied in young women who had not been exposed to any of the four HPV types in the vaccine.

I'm probably going to be the oddball here since I really don't vaccinate but if I ever have a girl I'll get her the vax if she becomes sexually active. They are pushing the vax on children, that is just plain wrong. Plus another thing, men can have hpv and spread to women, why aren't they pushing that vaccination on men too? If they want to vaccinate girls they should vax the boys too. Plus this vaccine is fairly new, I'd want to know how long it lasts, side affects, etc before I inject my child with it. For those who think I'm being a brat about this, I do have family members who got cervical cancer from hpv, even they wouldn't vaccinate little girls for it. Some are saying this vax cures cancer, they are wrong, you can still get cancer without having hpv, and vaccines aren't 100% effective.

I agree that if ones daughter is going to be promiscuous, it is not going to be because of the HPV vaccine, Morning After Pill, or making condoms available. People who want to be sexually active will do it regardless of what you put or do not put out there, or what they have learned about what is right or wrong. Women (mothers) need to understand that what Gardasil does is help protect young girls from 4 of the strains that cause cervical cancer - with or without sex. As in everything, EDUCATION is key!

Isn't that annoying. I think the vaccination would be wonderful and don't see how it changes a thing. Here in Michigan they were planning on being the first state to vaccinate all teenage girls for it but since they voted to ban affirmative action they might lose funding for it. And besides that, plenty of other women could benifit greatly from the vaccine even though they aren't teenage.

I agree with all the "yes's" to this vaccine. And I also wanted to mention that there is SOME evidence that sexual activity is not the only way to acquire the human papilloma virus. People may be born with it or develop it other ways. So it's ridiculous to think the vaccination is just a "go ahead" for unsafe sex. You could wait until you're married to have sex and THEN be exposed to it. Vaccination is a brilliant idea!

I agree. And it's only one of many sexually transmitted diseases. What a great opportunity it would provide for talking about making responsible choices!

MY daughter is going to get vaccinated, and I don't think it would have any effect whatsoever on her promiscuity.

Education is the answer - and parents are the front line.

When my doctor tells me that my daughters are old enough for the vaccine, they are going to get it. I do have some control on their whereabouts now, but when they go off to college, they may not remember to listen to me. I just want them to be safe, and this is just another way I can help my mission. Much better to be safe than sorry.

Any parent who wouldn't get their daughter the vaccine is doing them a dis service. Shame on them! We get them vaccinated for everything else. Why not this?

Hey J Charles

You can get this at 12 and you can get this at 50. If we protect our daughters now, maybe we can get rid of it all together.

I've known too many people who have died from cancer to know that anything that will lower my risk of getting it, is something I definitely want to do.

I think *good* parents are the ones that get their daughters vaccinated and also keep teaching them what's right.
