There are many reasons. Stress, barometric pressure changes, allergies, hormone changes and with some people bright or strobing lights. If you have migranes more than 3 times in a month you need to see a doctor. Keep a diary of what you eat drink and the climate etc. This may help to pinpoint what is causing them.
Migranes can be all over the head and you experience zigzags or flashes. They can blur your vision or they can only be on one side of the head involving that side of the head, face ear and down the neck into the shoulder (cluster headaches). Nausea and a metallic taste in the mouth can also be symptoms.

I have suffered from migraines since I was 10 years old-I am now 50 so I have had 40 years experience. I do know a bit about them. First, you can have a migraine at any time. There is no set pattern-I have gone months and even years without having a single migraine. There are many migraine triggers. Hormones play a big part. That is why women suffer from migraines 3 times more than men. A week before your period is the worst time. I found that birth control pills helped me. Also, sinus problems and allergies as well as hot weather can trigger migraines. Certain foods can also be a trigger-chocolate and sugar are the number 1 offenders. Cheese can also do it. Watch your stress level too. Ask your Doctor about the triptan drugs such as imitrex and maxalt. These are very effective-they are expensive though. I have found that 2 regular excedrin works pretty good most of the time-the trick is to take medicine before your headache gets to bad. Good luck.

About 10% of the population get very bad and frequent headaches which are the called migraines
First thing to do is check your diet, hormonal levels, do they come at a certain time of the month, keep a diary of what evokes them
Then find a migraine doctor at a major university teaching hospital. Your family doctor is NOT the one to talk to about this.
Examine every part of your life. Smells, odors, foods, light, stress.

Certain foods can trigger them.Women can get them when they are premenstrual. My ex used to get them then.
What happens to your body.Well i can tell you what happens to mine.I see little shooting flashes of light in my vision .And my head starts to feel sore,as if i have a headache starting,I try to take paracetomol or strong asprin at this point as that can mostly control the pain.If that isnt possible my headache gets worse and i get hypersensitive to light and noise.I tend to get a huge amount of pain behind my weaker eye and if its a bad attack i also feel sick.At that point i give up and go to bed in a quiet and dark room.I used to get cluster migraines. Please dont ask how bad they are.Suffice to say that they used to leave me feeling totaly drained?
Find out what your trigger foods are.For me its milk and milk heavy chocolate such as Galaxy.I can have hard cheese, thankfully, but avoid soft ones.
Taking the pill can help some women.Yet cause problems for others.I have heard that feverfew is good but talk to a good herbalist first.
Why do we get migraines? All sorts of reasons.I am just gratefull that mine have lessened.I changed employers and that helped an awfull lot.Maybe that would help you?

My Doc told me that one of the reasons you get Migraine is because you have an over excitable brain (seriously ) other factors are diet, stress, bright light, noise and hormones, apparently your blood vessels in your head swell when you are having an attack which causes the aura, pain and nausea.

when i get a migraine its usally coz i have eaten too much citrus fruit or mature cheeses.
the best thing to do is find out what foods triggers them for you and avoid eating lots of it.
i wont eat anything that is citrus flavoured.
cheap window cleaning sprays even set them off for me. i dunno why but i wont buy them.
also have an eye test. as sometimes they can pick up causes of migraines that way. maybe u need glasses and your straining your eyes. that can cause them.
my migraines arent as frequent anymore now i have done all this.

All sorts of doctors have told me that they don't know what causes them or how to cure them. The medicines they had me try all made me sick so I started taking FEVERFEW from the health food store and got better right away.
