It's the easy way out of having to answer for your own actions. If all you have to do is BELIEVE to justify and be forgiven for theft, lies and murder, why would you choose to take responsibility for yourself?
Why else would a true individual choose to quote scripture instead of coming up with their own answers? Or try to prove the existence of God by listing technological advances of mankind? Flawed logic by brainwashed sheep.

I cannot tell you why people believe in God.
What I can tell you is why I believe in Him.
Let me describe to you what kind of person I was before I got to know God.
I was a very, very unhappy person. My life felt completely empty and I found joy in absolutely nothing.
I was depressed most of the time, sometimes suicidal and often agressive.
I suffered from bulimia and insomnia.
Some people at work were actually afraid of me...
I would wake up every day and wonder why I was still alive. I felt unloved and unwanted.
My own mother wanted me to go see a psychiatrist because she didn't know what to do with me anymore. She was afraid I would end up killing myself.
One day on my way home after a night out I felt so desperate, I cried out to God for help.
IThat night, my life changed.
I know this may sound hard to believe but I became a new person that very moment and I haven't been the same since.
For the first six months I felt like I was walking on a cloud. I got healed from bulimia overnight (which is a major miracle trust me!) and I quit drinking and eventually smoking.
Nobody told me I had to quit, the desire to drink or smoke was just not there anymore.
I haven't been depressed since, nor have I thought about suicide since that day.
It's been 10 years now and though I had to go through some hard times, I'm still eternally grateful for what God has done in my life.
I don't think I'd even be alive today if God had not reached out to me and given me a new life.
Why do I believe in God? Because when I called out to Him He answered me and because He changed my life.

People have a natural perception of the world at large as a kind of personification; it's the only way some people can come to terms with something as vast and incomprehensibly complex as reality. Stories of God fulfil this kind of perception.
I don't think it's entirely unhelpful in itself, either. Relating to existence on a personal level is a neat concept, if rarely executed properly.

Look at all the things people didn't used to believe in -
that man could fly
that man could travel to space
that man could walk on the moon
that you could speak into a box and someone across the country could hear you, or that you could take a minute strand of glass-like material and have 150,000 phone calls traveling through that strand ALL AT ONCE
that you could send a letter through a wire instead of the postal service.
Can man really deny that there might be someone very much like us but with superior intelligence and power?

I was just wondering why so many didn't.You might try to give a real question, and not something you feel in your head. But in answer to your sorry question,it's simple arithmetic. The Bible when lived by, works,it's not just in the heart as you refer here, but it works when all else fails. If you really do what the Bible says and leave out the "but" your life will change for the better and that is a fact and not a theory.

You sound exactly like I did 15 years ago.
Then this happened to me.
Several years ago I had an unusual experience concerning an uncle, a distant relative who lived over a thousand miles away.
While driving my car I suddenly felt the unmistakable presence of this relative that I hardly even knew. He was more like someone I had heard about than someone I knew. It was very strange; it felt as though I was momentarily lifted right out of my physical body. I seemed to be suspended somehow beyond space and time, bathed in a love so intense It felt like I could have just disappear into it at any moment if It would have let me. It only lasted for a few seconds, but it seemed to last forever at the same time. I realize how crazy this must sound. The experience was so strong that at first I was afraid I was loosing my grip on reality. I finally managed to chalk it up to an over active imagination.
Three days later I got a call from my aunt telling me that this uncle we are talking about had gone into a coma and died the day I had the experience. It felt like ice water had been poured down my back when she told me this. I had lost any real ideas of God or faith and had become somewhat of an atheist. Needless to say this experience caused me to rethink some of the conclusions I had come to.
I feel blessed to now understand that even in our darkest confusion something loves us so much that it went out of its way to assist me and bring me back to a state of absolute certainty about Gods love for us.
During the experience it seemed like there was a vast amount of information that I was somehow allowed access to. One thing that I came away from this experience understanding beyond any shadow of a doubt was that any Idea that God is unhappy with us or would judge or allow us to be punished for any reason is simply impossible.
I can’t explain the love I felt with words. They simply don’t make words big enough or complete enough to do this. The only way I can begin to convey this love to you is to say that there was simply nothing else there. Nothing but love. No hint of judgment, no displeasure of any sort. It is as though God sees us as being as perfect as we were the day we were created. It is only in our confused idea of ourselves that we seem to have changed.
I hope this is of some help to you. Good luck. Love and blessings.
Your brother don

I have a slightly different view on the tangible nature of God. For me, God IS visible. We CAN see Him, hear Him, and feel Him. I believe that God is the ultimate CREATOR and that nature is part of His majesty. We can hear Him if we but listen... To nature, to music, to children, to whatever... And we can feel Him when we experience the greatest mystery of all: love.

Ok...I am sorry for whatever caused you to lose faith your in God. Now, with that said, I don't know why people BELIEVE in God, but I can tell you that I KNOW God for myself, I talk to him daily and he listens and answers me, not always the way I want him to but he does. Sure I could skate through life without him, but why? May I suggest you take a minute to pray? Ask God with a sincire heart and an open mind to reveal himself; he will I promise you...
