The ones that God wrote were broken by Moses. The fragments of those and the second set of tablets engraved by Moses were kept in the Ark of the Covenant.
The Ark has not been seen (at least in public) since near the end of the First Temple era. One theory is that the Babylonians took it and eventually destroyed it and it is thus lost ot history. Another theory is that is was buried deep beneath the Temple in what is now the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. There is some circumstancial reports that it may have been located, and then its location re-sealed, shortly after Israel regained control of Jerusalem in 1967. A third theory claims that it was moved, first to Egypt and then to Ethiopia where it resides to this day.
Personally, I believe the second theory, that it is still in Jerusalem is the most likely. If so, and the words of the Bible regarding it are true (and if it exists then the Bible warnings about it must be given credence), then it cannot be moved until the descendants of certain families are identified whose appointed mission was to care for the Ark.

The original 10 commandments that God wrote on were destroyed by Moses. It happened right after God wrote them and gave them to Moses. When Moses came down from Mt. Sinai, the people had made a golden calf and were worshipping it. When Moses saw that, he became so angry that he broke the commandments, then took the tiny pieces and made the people drink it. So that's what happened with the original commandments. Afterwards, Moses went back up on the mountain and received the commandments again, but this time, he wrote them.
Hope this helps.

Saw an episode of the HistoryChannel progarm, "Diggingfor the Truth" where this subject was researched. They tracked the last known place where the Arc of The Covenant (containing the stone tablets) to a church in Ethiopia. However, no one except one specific "guardian" of that church is allowed in the building where the Arc is supposedly kept, so it cannot be verified. You can read their article at web site listed below. Or look on History Channel .com, enter Ark of the Covenant, then click on the tab that says."History.com".

They were put in the Ark of the covenant, and the Ark in no more.
When and under what circumstances the Ark disappeared is unknown.
Jeremiah foretold a time when the ark of the covenant would be no more, but that it would not be missed and Jehovah’s worshippers would experience no hardship because of not having it. Instead ‘Jerusalem itself will be called the throne of Jehovah.’—Jer 3:16, 17.
In the symbolic book of Revelation, John says that “the ark of his covenant was seen in his temple sanctuary” in heaven. Rev. 11:19 ; there you will find the original 10 commandments.

Indiana Jones found the ark of the covenant and it ended up in a huge government warehouse (after we got it back from the Nazis who all died when they opened it). This was also what caused Indy to jump into the future as captain of the Millenium Falcon.

In the Ark of the Covenant, but where the actual location of it is falls under mere speculation (despite what "Raiders of the Lost Arc" has to say about it)

supposedly they are being guarded by some people, I'm not quite sure where, somewhere in the East. anyone dare to get near will be shot to death. But I'm guessing a secret society has them elsewhere.
