What are the chances of getting damaging software put on my computer, note that I use Norton AntiVirus & Firewall. I check for updates for virus definitions, etc every day from the Norton website and its always up to date. Is there anything else I can do to increase my PC's security?

norton just looks for spyware, viruses and trojans...not all harmful software - if it's not in the database norton won't do anything.

there's nothing to stop me writing a single line of code to wipe your hard drive in the form of a *.exe, *.bat, *.com, *.vbs etc etc file and sending it to you - norton won't warn you that your computer is about to be killed.

norton might be a big name in the antivirus industry but see just how many people on this site say that norton didn't pick up a virus on their computer until they did a full system scan, what exactly does it do while it's running in the background if it's not looking for viruses? who knows.

EDIT: portscanning is just someone running software to scan random computers for weaknesses, pretty much every computer on the internet is portscanned daily - as long as you've a firewall setup and you keep windows updated via the microsoft website you've nothing to worry about. portscanning is the computer equivalent of walking down the road and trying car doors to find one that's open.
