being unaccepting of others, and arguing is war, just on a smaller scale. when we argue about religion or other things, all we are doing is taking steps backward, and we're not learning to live with one another. is anyone else aware of this?
your thoughts?

Civility & understanding always works. I am working for honest friendships with Yahoo Q&A people who do not believe as I do. I think the secret to acceptance is in our very makeup. We have ONE mouth and TWO ears. We should all listen twice as much as we speak.

If everyone agreed on everything, we would all be redundant and the world would be a very boring place.

Everyone has different views, ideas perspectives. Discussing and arguing them is what makes us human. To suggest eliminating it is to suggest the death of the species. It is possible, and preferable, that arguments be limited to the point of contention and not get personal. It is the latter that is the root of all problems.

The difficulty lies in that most people simply do not know how to argue. Emotion, feelings, have no place in arguments or debates, but unfortunately, most people refuse to check their emotions at the door.

A further difficulty lies in that some refuse to allow the existence of another's views, or the challenge of their own. These folks, almost universally, have been spoonfed lies their entire lives and wouldn't recognized truth even to save their own lives.

It's not the argument that is the problem, it's how most people argue that is.

I am an Atheist, and I completely agree with you. And, regardless of what a "certain element" above me hinted to, IT COMES FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE FENCE. Neither party is more innocent or guilty than the other. Everyone is guilty of being biased or judging the other groups that don't agree with them.

I just wish that everyone would respect EVERYONE'S beliefs, and realize that no matter what we believe or don't, it's a FREE country, and we can do what we please. The U.S.A was founded on the freedom of religion, and to escape religious persecution. But that's exactly what people of all beliefs and non-beliefs do! They cast judgement because they believe differently than they do. No one is absolutely right, no one will KNOW who is absolutely right, and no one is better than anyone else.

We are all equal, and until everyone realizes that, this will be a never-ending battle.

I think it's worth the argument. Religion is already holding us back so by seeking to remove it from society we are removing a hindrance to humanity's future development.

You are right, unfortunately it is the way things are. When ideologies clash, people do not want to work it out, they want to force their opinion on the others.

we who are tolerant must be tolerant of those who are not and everyone needs to respect each others right to free will.
