At what point do you consider your one year old child too sick to go to an in home day care. My provider only requires fever free/vomit free for 24 hours, but I do want to be thoughtful of the other children (although have no idea if other parents are as thoughtful). We are first time parents and not sure where to draw the line.

Do you send them with a runny nose and cough, coughs are different what kind of cough stays home?

What if there is never a fever or vomiting with this cold just runny nose and cough..is it ok to go?

I agree with the 24 hours for fever and vomiting I am asking about the lesser symptoms

I have this same problem. At any sign I keep my kid home because I do not want to get the other kids sick. But when I go to drop my child off when he is well there are kids there with runny noses and everything. I can not stand it. I think it is better to have respect and keep your kids home. That is what I do.

Hi. I was actually put in this dilemma this week. My daughter came down with a terrible cold. She caught it from another little boy in her daycare (which is "in home"). To tell you the truth, my first thought was, "Why isn't that little guy at home?". I have two opinions. First just to let you know. I don't work. I just started my little on in daycare last week because I am currently looking for work and it would be easier for me when I have interviews and such. When my little girl got sick, I immidiately kept her home. I did this first for the health of the other children and also because I know that my little one will be most comfortable with mommy. But I do have to say, that my first reaction to the sick little boy at daycare may have been a bit harsh. I am able to keep my daughter home because I don't work. But alot of parents don't have this freedom. So, yes, your little one will probably be more comfortable with you at home and the other children will have less chance of getting sick if you keep her home, but if you can't keep your little one home, than just do whatever your agreement with the caregiver is. You have to do what you have to do...........I would like to point out though.....and this is no way said to make you feel guilty....but as a daycare teacher myself (it's my field), I know first hand that the caregiver will be busy and may not be able to give your little sick one all the attention he/she may need or want in his/her time of discomfort. So if you do have a chance to stay home than it may be the best option for all involved.

(My child had a regular cold....a mucussy cough and a terrible runny nose)

I think 24 hours is ok. Children in day care or home care are more likely to get sick... its a fact! if you want to be really thoughtful than 2 -3 days. That is how long it takes an antibiotic to start to kill the virus ( if he has an antibiotic) If not and just a plain cold 24 hrs is ok:)

Well, my thinking is that if my daughter has anything that I do not want other parents' children to catch, she doesn't leave the house. I should have taken her to play group today, but she was sneezing all morning with a runny nose...I don't like seeing her that way, so out of consideration to other parents, and to my poorly daughter, I kept her home...I hate when I go to these playgroups and the other children are all suffering with colds, it shows that other parents aren't as considerate

Having a fever means what ever the sickness it can be spread faster , vomiting spreads germs .
If your child is not looking well or felling well , being home in bed is the best thing .

That's pretty much the rule of thumb for schools too. Some daycares don't want a child who has green mucas coming from the nose because apparently green/yellow is a sign of infection.

Maybe you could talk to your pediatrician but I would think 24 hours would be OK.
