The service man usually has insurance. This could total $50-$100 thousand dollars. If the lady has kids, they have money coming to them until they turn 21 or get married, whichever comes first. She and the children continue to have military health insurance until the kids are 21 or until she turns 65 or get married to a non-service member. There is some money she gets from social security and a little for burial expenses.

This only applies to service members who are married or have dependents. If not, the parents usually get an insurance check from the government.

my husband is military and he has a life insurance policy that's between 200-300k, and I think all military has this, as for it happening in combat, I'm not sure if there is any extra compensation for that, but I agree with the last post, it would never be enough. Thank God my husband has a career that keeps him stateside for the most part.

the current SGLI (service member life insureance) is $400,000 each servicemember may sign up for any amount from 0-the full 400,000 in $50,000 increments, and if the soldier dies in a on-duty plain crash that is $100,000 more. if the soldier gets injured in combat they get $100,000 for that too.
