I think the secret is the type of paint...some being easier to clean than others...eg Vinyl Silk...rather than egg-shell or matt.

Use a high quality paint in at least semi gloss. It can be repainted in the colors you love, just use a really good finish so it will clean well.

Keep all marking materials in a cabinet away from the children except when they are using them. That will help. Along with eating at the table only.

This helps keep the walls clean.

These colors are good for not showing dirt as bad, Cranberry Red, Bungalow Gold, Indian Summer., all found at Lowes Home
Improvement . I think you can get that permanent stain off or at least not as noticeable with a baking soda / water mix on a sponge....

Try Earth Colours
browns
tans
greens

If your daughter likes to draw on the walls try making a spot just for her out of blackboard paint a nice wood frame with a indent to keep some chalk, so that she can just draw there all the time and it cleans well with just a little bit of water. If she draws on the walls with chalk it also makes easy clean up.

There's really no colour that does not show dirt and marks. The only answer is to use good quality paint that can be washed and proper discipline for your children

Like others have said, I would suggest earth tones. (Browns, and greens are pretty, and can go with most any decor)

also, I'm sorry I don't know the name of it, but there is a kind of paint that you can just wash dirt and stuff right off. It's more expensive, but worth the investment to save your walls. ;)
