I have a very bad anxiety disorder, I went to my psych and he prescribed antidepressants such as paxil, lexapro, zoloft, welbutrin, lithium, and benzo's like klonopin and xanax- not all at one time of course, but I could not deal with the side effects of the antidepressants, they didn't work, made me more depressed and I felt like a zombie, and I couldn't have sex. The lithium didn,t work at all. The benzo's(Klonopin and Xanax) worked to lift my anxiety but they made me very angry and obnoxious, but I did like how they lifted my anxiety though. My question is is there any drug either over the counter or prescription that really helps with anxiety without the nasty side effects?

Please reconsider taking these meds. Yes, sometimes they can feel good for some time, but it doesn't last indefinitely and when the side effects get very bad, you can't get off them and things quickly go downhill. Withdrawal can last for years and cause physical and mental horrors. Check out www.benzoisland.org if you'd like some answers to your questions, and for much more info, including published studies, go to benzo.org.uk

How much time did you give the meds? Sometimes the side effects go away. I've tried many antidepressant/anti-anxiety combos (prozac, zoloft..). Nothing worked-until I tried Welbutrin & Klonopin. Maybe try a lower dose of the klonopin? I never had that happen with klonopin. And, I didn't notice any sexual side effects from Welbutrin. Hope this helps...Good Luck.

You have to ponder how bad the side effects are compared to your symptoms... finding the best combination of meds takes time and eventually with the help of your doctor you will find the right mix that will help you to have a good quality life... the thing is, it is very difficult to accept "the perfect" state is not made for those who depend on meds.

Benzos are cns depressants yet are often prescribed which incorporate antidepressants. some ssris like lexapro are ment to help with rigidity and melancholy. additionally benzos are addictive and are for use short term purely.

There is an anti-anxiety medication called BuSpar that is not a benzo. It may be worth checking out.

You know, medications will only help so much. Are you also in therapy? That's what you really need. If your anxiety and depression is so bad that you have been on every one of those medications and they haven't help....therapy is what you have to do.
