i just moved in a small one bedroom apt (rented) and I am stuck with white walls and a bluish gray carpet for both the living area and bedroom. I really like to incorporate red or other warm colors but I'm afraid that colors might clash. As of the moment, I only have my bed, which has a dark brown headboard. Any suggestion on what color of furnitures will work? how can I make my place inviting? if warm colors are not possible, what colors will work? what type of decor?

Do you want to wake up or warm the bluish gray carpet? I think reds are lovely with dark brown. You can work with a variety of grayed out pinks to complement.

For warm, a rich yellow is nice and welcoming.

Darker colors warm a room, making the room cozier. If you have a small space, keeping the same one or two color families throughout your condo will make your space look larger. It tones down the appearance of clutter.

The colors of your bed, couches, and curtains play the largest part in the character of your decor. Since you are not painting the walls, you can consider a good sofa in red. Fat chairs in red or your secondary colors and a different texture make the room. A leather club or recliner is great too. Start with the furniture. Group them together if you can avoid the walls. Finishing the room gets easier from there.

Your bedspread is the center piece of the bedroom. Make sure you have an abundance of pillows, and maybe a throw on your bed. Take the colors and style from your bed and mimic or complement accessories for your walls. Its easy, like the living room.

Remember to cross complement the two colors, fabrics, and textures. Pillows matching curtains, for example.

Place your curtain rod as high up to the ceiling as you can when dressing your windows. This makes rooms appear larger. Puddle the fabric at the base. If you prefer modern, flat panels are dramatic. The print on a fabric is neutral if it muddles - you can't see it when you squint at it.

Have fun!

it depends what is your foucus in the room, is there a TV or Fireplace? The arrangement will be more like Sofa on one wall, and loveseat on the wall that is shorest or have entry ways. Then the two recliner put on the same side with a little end table in between. For colors, you need to identify a highlight color, it seems a nice yellow/gold will work out. Maybe green or slat blue. It is hard to describe colors. Put an artwork on the wall with all the colors in the room, and it is okay to include some other colors not in the room, but the presence is very minimal. Then you need to have some pattern pillows on the sofa and loveseat. and for the recliner, you can put something beige on it, like a throw. Or the same pattern of pillows in bolster or rectangular shape. On the end tables, you will have some sort of floral/candle arrangement have the highllight colors in a container with beige or brown. It is all about accessories. You even can change your lamp shade into brown. Put something on the coffee table that will tie the colors together. The best way is to look in fabric stores, all the textile have the combination of colors pallet that already worked out. Take the fabric swatch and start to look for the pieces that will fit into the color. Start with stores like Pier 1 imports, Home Goods, etc...

You need to go with warm autumn colours but not bright colours.

I would suggest a nice terracotta, a deep muted red maybe even a soft green. With scatter cushions and a throw you could use all three colours and maybe get a rug that brings all the colours together in one. A rug incorporating all colours is always a good way to bring a room together. In addition you could use shades of brown to complement. That is obviously to accessorise the room. For buying furniture I would stick with the same tone of wood you already have in your bed. So dark woods like mahogany which will also go with the colours I mentioned.

Other than colours lighting is very important. If you want to have a warm feel then make sure you have many subtle lights rather than one central harsh light. It can make all the difference.

Really when decorating a room it is a good idea to pick one thing you really love and use that to build the theme around. It could be some art work, a candle stick or whatever but its a good place to start.

Also white walls are great for displaying art work and photographs and that can be a really cheap way to make a room feel homely and your own. On my white walls in my hall I have simple clip frames (postcard size) and my one picture (my favourite) of each family member and friend hung up sort of randomly like a collage. It is great to come home to.

Good luck with making your appartment your home!

I think rich woods would go well in that area. You should be able to incorporate some brighter colors into the room. Try brighter blues to match the carpet. I wouldn't spend too much unless you plan on spending a great deal of time living there.

I actually JUST moved into a new place too. Can you paint the walls?? I painted the white walls a warm rust color, and it makes the BIGGEST difference. However, I do have to paint them white again when I move...but, to make a rented place more like "home", it's worth it.
If you can't paint, I think the walls with the blue-ish grey carpet sounds like it looks modern. Try blue and black accsessories...
just an idea.
Have fun it your new place....live it up!

Hi. Thought you might be in a condo. If youre planning on staying a while, then its worth changing the colour of a few walls, not all. Keep kitchen white...making certain it is laminate.
Use on your biggest liv. room wall....a beautiful warm red-wine colour, leave the opposite wall while and use a monochromatic colour (i.e. palepale pink, beige, etc) for the trim. Also, do a reproduction of your favourite picture from a magazine etc(using your walls and trim colour scheme), reproduce the picture, frame it, hang it and put a light under it.
In the bedroom, why not use a beautiful yellow---with a touch of green for the bedroom.

My second bedroom/tv watching room has hardwood floors, a white ceiling and blue-gray walls. The furniture in the room is plum and it looks great! I have an overstuffed sofa (a sofabed) and an overstuffed chair-and-a-half. The tv sits on a black wood and glass table and my lamps are multi-colors of purple and blue wood with beige shades (they are better than they sound...)

I think lots of greens would look nice... with maybe some blues incorporated into your beadspread, with green pillows, etc. Light green can be either a warm or cool color depending on how yellow it is. Really it sounds like your possibilities are endless. Good luck!

I think more cooler colors would go with these colors. You may want some deep burgundys or purples. Also go with black and white. It will make the room stand out but not to much. Also for decoration...laces are a must with those. It's comfortable and it's not to cold.

Sounds like pastels would go best, but you could de-emphasize the carpet by covering some of the middle area with a rug that matches the color scheme you want.
