As a fellow sufferer of a sleeping disorder, there isn't a whole lot to do except get a sleep study. An apnea may be involved with the person *does* sleep. Also, the meds used to treat insomnia don't work forever. It's an awful condition. The only real help that I can suggest is quite hard to follow (trust me, I know). It's called "sleep hygiene." Click on the link below to find out more. Also, cutting out smoking and caffiene and any other stimulants might help.

Wow, 18 years being on sleeping pills, thats rough. I suggest a Sleep Disorder Center if all else fails. There, they will figure out what the problem is, that's what they need, to treat the problem.

There are many natural ways to enduce sleep, see a natropath and they can suggest some suppliments to help.

Your loved one will most likely have to be weined off of sleeping pills, they probably have built up quite a dependency on them by now. That should be done with medical supervision.

Have Dr perform a sleep study to determine the cause of the insomnia. He may reccomend a CPAP machine that pumps air under pressure into the lungs using a small mask on your face. It sounds like a pain in the a ss, but I have used one, and it really helped.
There's all kinds of pills, but I think they just address symptoms and not the problem.

Is it a case of mind over matter? Whenever I have insomnia it is due to stress and anxiety. Maybe this person has some issues that are stopping them sleeping? I suggest counselling/therapy. Though after 18 yrs I can imagine that it is almost impossible to break any of these habits.

Also how about hypnosis?

My friend has that problem too. Could try a sleep clinic, you know where they study your sleep patterns. Or hypnotherapy, though not 100% convinced that works. Or NLP, Neuro Linguistic Programming, re-programs the brain to learn new behaviour patterns. Hope some of that proves helpful.

After getting off drugs for sleeping it may take some time to get it straightened out . Best to ask a doctor.

Maybe if the doctors find whats going on in the brain that makes the person have insomnia, they could do a brain surgery to take that particular gland out.
