well its a good thing becuase you are giving back to your community. think about all the things that you take from your community like going to the park, walking your dog, and all that other stuff, who do you think cleans up after you in a public place if you leave a mess, its your community, so in return you should volunteer and give back something to your community
it is also a great experience, i remember in highschool were i volunteered in a homeless shelter for thanksgiving. I was working the line and giving them some food. then a little boy came up to me and gave me a hug, and said thank you. when i was on my break i sat next to him and his family. he told me his story that his family just recently lost everything and now hes homeless. at that point i felt so bad cuase i had so much and i never thought about other people that never had anything.
if you have a lot be nice and share it, if you dont have that much its ok go share your time with people that have nothing, it makes them feel better.
thats why i volunteer because it makes me feel better becuaes i am giving back to the community, and you get so many great experiences that would stick with you for the rest of your life.

Most elementary schools in this country are in desperate need of volunteers to help out with various things from helping in the lunch room, office and library, to helping special needs kids, working in the computer lab, and with art projects. Contact an elementary school near you and see if they have a volunteer program. Also, a group of unsung heroes among volunteers are those people who have a large enough heart to visit at nursing homes a couple of times a week. If only just to help hand out the mail, read, or just sit and listen to someone talk to you. Many of these people get no visitors and are hungry for attention. The lives you will touch and the genuine smiles you receive will surely benefit you more than the elderly people you will be involved with. good luck,

I've been volunteering ever since I was a kid. I guess it's kind of ingrained in me by now. I guess that's part of the reason why I joined the Lion's Club.
There are so many people in need in the world, and to help even one person even with something that seems so insignificant to many of us, is a wonderful thing. It's amazing that giving a child a hat and mittens for winter would bring them such joy if they didn't have the warm clothing in the first place. Or bringing fresh baked bread to the elderly. Even helping a disabled person bring their laundry to the car at the laundromat. There are so many small things that can be done to help. It's doing a good thing. Not only that, it feels so good to be able to help. Just to see that smile, to hear the words "Thank you", to see the tears of joy in someone's eyes... That's reward enough for being a volunteer!

Volunteers keep many social programs going. Try to imagine a soup kitchen that paid everyone, how long would they keep going? How about a scout troop?

Colleges see it as an initiative thing, that you'll go out and better the community and not even get paid.

It's nice to give back and to help others. Many organizations would not exist without them.

apart from the fact that you are giving back to your community, it looks great on your resume especially if you are a student or if you are looking for a job for the first time.
