This is what a Canadian friend of mine said who lives in Turkey:
"The EU? Well, I'd describe the Turkey / EU dance of flirtation as a relationship that's destined to end in tears... All Turkey really seems to want is to be able to sit with the cool people in the world's high school cafeteria. If a few 'Western' countries would give Turkey a smile and a pat on the back and say, "Do you want to come to my party this Friday? Finland and Iceland will be there...", I think it would do wonders for Turkey's self-esteem! :)"

this is a very important question to understand how societies work. understand turkey and u'll understand y the arab world hates the west.
the ordinary masses r disillusioned with the west. the drive of the government to make turkey part of EU made it push reforms that have led to great economic disparity in the country. the middle class is slowly getting pushed into poverty. the country is getting rich, the people are not.
secondly, even if the economic benefits can be percolated on a large scale, it is the cost of the prosperity that is scaring the ordinary turks. they fear the baggage of moral values that will accompany the accompany the economic prsperity. disparaging on the basis of religion, on the basis of ethnicity.................u've understood some of them urself.
the freedom of movement and boom in trade has never been good for ny country in the region. they have always had to pay a price. even if the y become a part of europe, europeans will always be looking at them as a poor liability. their efforts they have put in till now has gone un-appreciated, with time the thanklesness will take a larger socio-political toll on turkey and its attitudes towards europe and the west.
the fianl toll will be taken by the european biases towards israel and for the americans. both countries have wrecked havoc and instability in the region--ny alliance with europe will also mean having to accept israel and iran as allies, which no country in the region will be ready to do.

Like maximum individuals reported, it particularly is with the aid of fact the immigrants in those eu countries ought to no longer be good voters. to illustrate, in France there have been riots all final year via Muslims who got here from countries including Africa, Turkey, and the middle East. i think of those people could sense some style of hatred in direction of Muslims because of this. I additionally think of that the conflict in Iraq is yet another clarification why maximum eu countries do in comparison to us. of direction the worry-unfastened false impression is that Turkey is an ALL Muslim u . s . a . with radicals from the Shi'ite team...which isn't actual. we are a secularist government with many voters who're Sunni Muslim, and Shi'ite being the minority.

We are sick and tired of EU's double standards. EU talks about universal values, then invents new accession rules for Turkey. It admits economically and socially inferior post-communist block countries and denies even what it accepted to give (support for Turkish Cypriots?). EU is becoming more and more disfunctional every passing day and I really began to doubt what benefit it would bring me to join a loser union.

Turkish people still want to join. they want to join to have more freedom such as pass controls etc. but turkey has always stood in a place where many other countries want to have control. since there has been many changes in the law and etc. some people fear the loss of independance and freedom it has fought for many years.

im one of them. because Turkey has biggest 13th economy now it is growing %7 - 8 everyyear thats mean Turkey ll be 3th economy in EU 20 - 25 years later. and Turkey ll be biggest market for EU countries because Turkey ll has100 millions people 30 years later.
all estimates ( this is my job) says Turkey ll be great i dont want to take risk with EU and with their complex ,unreliable, incomprehensible, stereotype agreements papers
but i dont feel any bad things aganist EU because they r trying to make harmless colony this is normal for european mental but they cant able we r smarter than all i m always against joining and i ll be forever

They do not want to be part of a union so to speak. They want complete freedom to make all decisions concerning imports and exports of their goods without the EU butting in.
I do not blame them. I would say overall the EU has been a failure on all levels. They failed to accomplish the one thing they set out for so far. That is unity among ALL European Countries.
