I was in Ankara at his Mausoleum. It is incredible. Ataturk did so much for Turkey; he was responsible for keeping the British and others (Greeks, etc) from carving up the former Ottoman empire after world war I, making it a kind of 'Gaza Strip" by the Black Sea.
At Cannakale he told his men 'I'm not asking you to fight, I'm asking you to die", and he sent army in who were born in that area, were from there, and they turned the tide and kept the invaders out, devastating the mostly Aussie troups that were sent in to take that area, as a staging ground for taking the Bosphorus, then, ultimately, taking Istanbul.
The British had not counted on someone like Mustafa Kemal, however, who so incredibly roused his troups and countrymen, that he made it impossible for the enemy to advance.
Intelligent is an understatement. Ataturk is a hard man to follow. He was responsible for making Turkey the only secular Muslim country in the world, separating religion from politics.

I am not even Turkish. In fact I am half Greek half Italian residing in Italy currently. And I truly believe ATATURK was one of the if not the BEST leader the world has ever seen. Turkey should be proud to have such a leader start their nation. Unfortunately it seems that there are sme idiots within the current government arguing against Ataturk laws and they shoudl be punished. If Ataturk was to still be alive I believe Turkey would have become the most prosperous country in the world. I know that some of the European countries and the US does not want to allow this and they show a lot of support to the terrorist groups. They say they are against terrorism but they are the ones that support it. But Ataturk would have been the ideal man, with BALLS, to fight against these idiots. Turkey needs a new leader that has his charisma, vision and authority to take he next step.
I dont know what the 10th stands for and why you were sad. But ATATURK was unquestionably great.

I am not Turk but I think that Turkey was extremely lucky to have had a leader like Ataturk. A true genuine Nationalist who saved his country and was so far sighted. I have total respect for him, as do a lot of other people in many countries around the world. There will never be another Ataturk and I hope the Turks always follow in his foot steps and never forget that they have a wonderful country because of him.
