Yes, it takes a bit of explaining doesn't it?
Why not tell her the truth, and it would be a really good opportunity to tell her about Santa as well, but shes most likely sussed that bit out for herself?
Dont leave it too late ,I had the unpleasent task of telling my Son the truth a couple of weeks ago, (hes 27 this year) he had sussed out about God , but he was heartbroken when I told him that Santa was also a fairy tale!
Hope this helps??

If you are looking for a come back for your little 8 year old. You can tell her God is the Creator of parents, the first parents were Adam and Eve.

Wow! your daughter has proven to be a deep thinker. your job as an apparently caring parent is to be there and help her find answers to her thoughtful questions. its ok if you respond by encouraging her and saying, "thats such a smart question, let me think about it a little." Thats so much better than accidentally giving her an answer spontaneously thats not good or maybe wrong. never say ill tell you when your older. it just makes them more confused and frustrated.
as for that particular question, a good answer i would give is, "thats what makes G-d so special; he doesnt need parents like the rest of us. he's our parent, and He created the world in order to give out his goodness....." you can start from there and add in your own thoughts.

Your 8 year old has discovered the problem of regression which is one of the many flaws in the religion business. It is the last question in the watchmaker argument. Who then created the watchmaker. At this point most believers retreat into the citadel of "you just have to have faith". A very bright (pun intended) young lady. Please do not destroy her good mind with bronze age myths.

God has always been and always will be. He has always been there, he was not created.

I think it is too big for our minds to understand. Just like the question about the universe, does it end? If so, what is on the other side?

Our human brains tell us that there is a beginning and end to everything...this doesn't hold true to infanites.
