My son is turning a year old and this is my first child. I know it's too soon to put him in a twin bed, but I'm curious to know what is age appropriate for a toddler.

It is appropriate as soon as he can crawl out of his crib. Let him decide which bed he wants... A toddler bed or a twin bed. If he is an active sleeper and moves around a great deal in his sleep you might even consider a full sized bed for him. My son started crawling out of his crib at about seven months so we purchased a toddler bed. He never slept in the toddler bed, however, as he chose to wait for lights out and then went into the guest room and crawled up on the full sized bed. He is eight years old today and has been on a full sized bed for seven years.

I put my 18 mth old in a full size bed. He is really tall, and we new he'd outgrow a twin bed, so we skipped it. I put bed rails around it and I put a gate at his door. He got up a few nights once he figured out he could, but the gate helped him realize that he still had to stay in his room. It took no more than a week for him to just lay down and go to sleep. When he came to the gate, we let him cry for a while and then told him to get back in the bed. We would walk him to the bed while telling him to go back to bed. By the third night, we would tell him and he'd go on his own. Then my the fifth night he just went to sleep. It worked really well, but you have to commit. Once you ditch the crib, don't go back, or he'll have a hard time transitioning to the bed.

I have two boys and three girls. I am now pregnant with my sixth, a boy.

We have a five bedroom house. One is used for their play room, one is the guest room, one for the boys, and one for the girls. The master is mine and my hubby's.

I used toddler beds when they were 18 months, then at 28 months, I put them in bunk beds. The bottom is a full size and the top is twin. I have a crib in my room for a new baby. Always but the oldest one at the top.

They have protective guard rails for the beds, we put those up all over so they don't fall out.

Make sure you start out with the toddler bed in your room to see if he will be okay in a real bed. once you put him in his room, use the guard rails.

I have a 4 and 5 year old girls and they have been in bunk beds for over a year now. They love it and it is a great space saver. They were in twin beds before that and have been since they would not stay in a crib.

If it's a low bed or the bottom bunk you can do it with a bed rail as soon as you think the bed rail will keep them falling out of bed as long as their room is totally childproofed. You are supposed to do it at least when they can climb out of the crib but no reason you can't do it before that. My daughter never slept in a crib (she slept in our bed) but we put her in her own twin bed with no bed rail at about 2 years 3 months and she has done well.

With our youngest, I started her in the bottom bunk at age 2. I installed the side rail with netting and she was fine. Some kids will get up and out of the bed, but, the key is getting them back in as soon as possible.

Little kids can be overwhelmed by great big beds. A much better bet is a toddler bed. They are smaller, and many are expandable and grow with your child (and they are dirt cheap at Ikea)

One piece of advice though... if you want to make the transition easy, wait until he asks for a "big boy bed"

I did it when my kids were going to harm themselves by crawling in and out of the crib. I have three kids and they went to a normal bed at different ages.

Our oldest son grew to become into sixteen months while he went from his crib to a baby mattress. Our daughter grew to become into fairly much 18 months while she switched. Our youngest son is 14 months and could probable be transitioning interior the subsequent 6 months.
