It depends on what your definition of a "living" organism is. Life probably started out as something like a self replicating organic molecule...like a prion. Early "life" was probably indistinguishable from basic organic chemistry. Your question didn't ask about the origin of molecules, just the origin of the first life forms.

First, there was a big explosion. Then the debris from the cataclysm decided to get together by accident. At the perfect place, around the perfect star, the perfect planet formed with the perfect climate to support life. (Completely by accident, mind you.) Then, Al Gore invented organisms and the Internet.
