Cats are like free spirits, untrainable (they only pretend to be) and always wild. (abililty to go from domestication to wild survival at the blink of an eye) ... No other animal is capable of this....SO individuals that are free spirtits, thinkers, not part of the average herd (sheep) are drawn to cats as their is an uncanny similarity. They are the purr fect creature.

I think it can depend on whether you grow up with a dog or a cat and therefore how confident you feel in owning one as an adult. There are numerous reasons above as to why people "should" prefer cats but as to why they do, I'm sure the answers vary. Just like some people find birds cute, others do not..perhaps it is the way people are socialised, what their parents thought about cats may influence their decision or just simply from trial and error; having owned a cat versus a dog, they simply prefer it.
As for companionship, every cat is as unique as us. Some cats need so much love they fall over their own feet to get it, some love everyone that comes near them, others despise affection or hate being picked up and some simply choose one person in the household.
However, all in all, they bring a good vibe into the house and most do offer affection to the owner. This is a form of companionship.

The following is reasons why I have cats (3):
1. They don't try to lick my face. Nothing nastier than a dog that just ate pooh and now wants to kiss you!
2. They're added warmth in the winter, my lap is never cold.
3. If I wish to go away for the weekend, I know I can come home and things be just the way I left them. I.E. No chewed shoes, newspapers, or door frames. No s*$# in the house.
4. Every other day feedings. Cats aren't gluttons like dogs, they make their food last.
5. When cats are in play mode, all you have to do is sit back and watch the silliness.
6. Very independent - if they want to be touched you will know.
7. Each cat has very different personalities.
8. Grooming is soooooo much easier.
9. Vet bills are nowhere near as high as a dog's.
10. And the best reason of all--- Paris Hilton hasn't turned them into a fab!

Well we have 3 and one is what you call a lap cat. He craves attention, loves being petted and everything just like a dog does. They all love to go on walks and will follow you around and play with you. They will also sleep on the bed with you or on a chair. The best part is they have a litter pan so if it snowing or raining you don't have to get wet to let them go to the bathroom, no loud barking because the neighbor came home at 3 am. Also If you have a cat or 2 you can go out of town for a few days and don't have to find someone to come stay with them or board them. I love dogs too but that is the advantage I have found of having cats.

Cats don't jump on you and bark so loud the second you come through the door, they don't slobber on you, and they don't maul the baby. They don't roll in mud and track it through the house, and the furniture. They are fluffy and warm, and it is soothing to hear a cat purr when you have had a bad day. They don't take up the whole bed when they sleep with you. They can be left outside, cats, and not have animal control called because of running wild being a nuisance to the neighborhood. Cats generally stay out of your way. They are independent, and free spirited.

My two sons ages 8 & 10 have 2 cats which are brothers, but from separate batches. Our cats are playful and loving and our older one is just as good as a watchdog. He growls before someone at the door even gets a chance to knock. They know when you are sad and need affection and also know when to leave you alone. We can also leave for a few days and not have to have someone take care of them. They have automatic waters and feeders and they always use the litter box. If you are someone on the go...... a cat is the purr..fect pet!

I prefer cats because I can't stand the smell of a dog. My cats give lots of affection. & 1 of my 2 cats sleep outside my daughters bedroom door everynight like he's her protector.

Because the feline masters are generally benevolant... forgiving... and don't demand too much. They will not argue... They will not go and spend all your money haphazardly on shoes or expensive shopping. They don't nag. They don't hog the duvet. They don't get upset if you forget their birthday or "anniversary". They don't hold it against you if you don't understand their complex social rituals, as unlike "fellow humans" they understand full well that you're an incompetant ape... and won't expect too much of you for it.
All they ask is that you'll be a good servant, a provider of food, a suitable couch on occasion... pay them plenty of attention...... and in return they grace you with their divine presence and allow you to touch them. If you're REALLY lucky they will even pay you deceased rodents for your troubles.
Besides.... its so much easier to communicate with cats than other humans.... or so I generally find.

I agree with everyone! Cats are cheaper ( everything from their food to shots). No need to walk them, and they use a liter box. Our cat is very comical. He sleeps in the bed with us (and the dog). You can check out our kitty here:

How can you resist a face like that?
