Ignorance of what it is. They hear "magic" and assume that must mean we're summoning demons to do our bidding. So they attack the image they have of it.
True, they use the word Pagan to mean something insulting. Personally, I don't allow other people to define that word for me. That would be like me trying to define Christian and saying ALL Christians fit that description that I made up. So, what they call me and what they mean by it doesn't bother me. It's when they make up stories or spread false information and claim to be a truthful person, THAT annoys me. The group as a whole can't claim to be persecuted when they continue to do such things based in ignorance and hatred.

People are afraid of magic because to witness real magic would force the people to believe in other things like God, Satan, witches, ghosts and the spiritual world. Those who allow such thoughts are witness to some incredible occurrences. Then it becomes necessary to decide between right and wrong. And that takes a commitment that most don't want to give.

Because magick harkens back to the religions that Christianity displaced. Anything pre-Christian is deemed evil and of the devil, because that's how early Christians forced pagan peoples to convert - "scare tactics". Even Judaism had magick traditions, namely the Qabbalah. I don't know enough about Islam to know what they believe of magick, but Christians fear magick because they thought they destroyed it when they really just pushed it underground. Now that it's having a major resurgence, especially in the Northern Hemisphere long dominated by Christianity, they're starting to panic, because they have to accept that they didn't destroy it before with swords, so their only hope now is to destroy it with slander.

Man is afraid of what he doesn't understand or what he can't have.
I've never heard the term Pagan be used in a derogatory manner, but neither have I heard gay used in a derogatory manner besides one very old, grumpy man.

Since you are either for God or against God there is no straddling the fence. If you do not serve God who do you serve? Everything good comes from the father of celestial lights. Satan wanted the glory that was rightfully Gods since he rebelled in heaven and was cast down to the earth. Remember what it says in the bible, woe to the earth and to the sea as the devil comes down to you having great anger:
Revelation 12:12
12 On this account be glad, YOU heavens and YOU who reside in them! Woe for the earth and for the sea, because the Devil has come down to YOU, having great anger, knowing he has a short period of time.”
If you engage in bible study you will see how important knowing these things are to what you choose to believe. This wicked system is going to be ended once and for all when Jehovah takes action and we all need to be giving this serious thought. There are many witnesses to this fact and and some things were foretold centuries before so that there is no doubt to their accuracy.
In order to practice what is pleasing to God we need to find out what it is, remember the bible is like reading the mind of God, it is our road map to life. It is also possible to share this good news with others in a respectful way so that they too can see for themselves and decide. Some may not be aware of what they are really dealing with. I have included a couple of links for you to check out why these beliefs that you are speaking of may not be the wisest course, the bible encourages christians to stay separate from what is bad.

"When I acquired a letter from the rector which instructed that I used to be 'searching for to steer our kids into places of evil', I felt that the hindrance used to be escalating disproportionately." I believe this used to be an overly intelligent option. I am no longer particullarly saavy on how the Brits do university curriculum, however I am similarly leary over the fanfare many in our nation have taken towards our latest push to indoctrinate political affairs into our kids via the general public faculties. That scares me simply as so much. At least it sort of feels that the Headmaster over there honestly regarded the moms and dads matters in his selection. For that I am ecstatic. Frankly, at the places of witchcraft, demons, magic, and the supernatural as a entire I am skiddish to mention the least. Maybe no longer for all however for lots of this can be a diversion from the reality, in view that it deceives men and women into pondering it's innocent all of the at the same time it demanding situations their religion with illusions. This is the character of the deceit, and as Daniel aspects out within the Bible so much if no longer all of it's verified to be fake ultimately. Even men and women who declare to already realize this may occasionally invoke magical recommendations and features unconciously to items or men and women after they fairly aren't there. Like Jesus says, "He who has ears, concentrate!" there are lots of who've eyes however don't see. Consider the command above and why it used to be stated. His parable afterwords used to be for the ones men and women who had ears and would concentrate, in view that He discovered on this that there have been many there who had ears and heard His phrases, however would no longer concentrate in view that He used to be no longer speaking to them at the moment. With the case of all this sorcery and witchcaft, if men and women aren't skeptacle of it, then they're like those Jesus used to be no longer speaking to, they've eyes however don't "see" so then they don't comply with the reality both like those in Jesus crowds that "heard" what He used to be revealing to them within the parables.

You know what the worst tag is, the one a person is most hated for and most persecuted. Know much history??? Its to be tagged "Christian".
I have no feeling on magic other than I have never seen anything I would truly call magic. SOME Christians believe its associated with satanic behavior, I am not one of them.

they do not understand it and cannot control it so they fear it.
that is why we invented GOD, so we could pretend to have control over the things we do not control ( like lightning etc)
