Don't use dish soap. The detergents and additives in it are meant to strip grease and dirt from dishes will strip health from your hair.

My 15-year-old daughter's hair is very dark brown, almost black-looking. She wanted to bleach it, but we discussed this at great length, and she opted instead for colored streaks. We couldn't afford a salon visit, either. I found a product in WalMart (hair products aisle), made by Loreal. It came in a dark red color she liked, called "raspberry". It was made specifically for dark hair. It wasn't cheap (I think I remember paying something like $9), but, it worked. She ended up with really cool-looking dark reddish colored streaks (we could have done the whole head, but she only wanted streaks), almost a magenta color. In shopping for this product, I did notice that there were a few others made specifically for dark hair. Go and check out the hair coloring section at WalMart, and see if any of these products will suit your needs.

Before you make any decisions, bear in mind that stripping your color (to lighten it) will damage your hair, and result in dark roots as your hair grows out. You may want to re-think your wishes.

**Dish soap will only lighten your hair if you have colored it dark and want it lighter, otherwise you are out of luck. If you decide not to take my advice and do it anyway, please make sure you have some form of a deep conditioner to use afterwards as dish soap is VERY damaging to hair and should only be used once a month if that! If you want to lighten it I recommend going to a cheaper salon, do you have a headstart in your area? and asking to speak to the color professional! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that is the only way to not go orange**

Not expensive, maybe $20, and you can apply it yourself (read the instructions). Go to a beauty supply store and buy the colour you like and the 40 volume peroxide (high lift) or 30 volume if you don't want it TOO much lighter. If it's not light enough, wait at least four weeks and you can safely do it again, that is IF you've conditioned your hair well in the meantime with moisturizing conditioners or restructuring ones, etc.

No. Don't use dish soap it will only ruin your hair and make it rough and dry! Just use color if you want it lightened.

It does lighten the hair, but it is not healthy to be used.

even as break of day will get rid of the oil from the hair, it shouldn't"t get rid of organic color. besides the undeniable fact that, it may pull pretend color out of hair. in case you color your hair with "hair color", a harsh shampoo or break of day dish Liquid, can pull a number of the color out.
