I have a daughter who is involved with drugs and is planning to sign over custody of unborn child to paternal grandmother who is not of Native heritage. I also have 3 year old grandson that I have not seen since April '06 by same daughter. I believe the drugs and other influences have caused her to neglect his needs. He was a tiny tot grass dancer until all this has gone down, so he has been exposed to his heritage but his mother and her friends are keeping him from it now.

there is a law called "the indian child welfare act" , it proposes that native american indian children be placed into a native american indian home, so as not to lose there heritage and culture.
hope this helps.

Why won't your daughter sign her children over to you? Have you tried to ask for custody? If you think your grandson is being neglected, you should call Social Services to check into it in order to protect him. Surely your Nation has an attorney who can answer these questions for you.

I am sorry you are having to go through this. Our children can certainly break our hearts. The little ones need stability and I hope you can offer it to the little fella. As far as laws go, I believed every tribe has their own. Is that not right? Here are two sites that might help. In the meantime call an attorney who represents your tribe. Best of luck dear.
