My cat molts a lot so she swallows a lot of fur when grooming herself, so she either vomits it up or it stays in her gut (which is not good). I groom her to get rid of excess hair, but is there a way of stopping her hair from shedding in the first place? if not, do you think it is good to give her cod liver oil (to bring her fur balls up and improve her coat)? thanks

Comb or brush daily and yes, fish or flaxseed oil added to your cat's food will help with digestion and help reduce shedding.

you cannot stop it moulting. If you are grooming it daily and it is still losing too much then you are not grooming properly or with the correct brush or comb. I HAve 12 cats including a long coated one and groom them all every single day. My home has hardly any loose cat hair in it. Cod liver oil in excess can poison the cat. You just need to groom every day and with the correct grooming equipnment. USe a zoom groom if it is short haired and a comb if it is long haired.

The hair will shed if you have significant changes in ambient temperature. If its warm in the summer and cold in the winter.... then the cat will tend to shed toward the summer... and get floofier in the winter. The rest of the time the shedding may just be a general thing..... though not as extreme.

You can't stop it happening.... short of having an absolutely flawless temperature-control system for several years... and keeping said cat indoors (which isn't nice)... and that would only slow it besides.

Its possible you might just have to groom her more often...

the thing you need is a product called catalax (from any vets) it cost about £5 and works really well. it breaks up the fur and helps you cat pass it, i'm afraid there is no way to stop her moulting unless you want to shaver bald every 6 weeks (not recommended !!) My cat's do it to. you can by food again from a vets that has a ingredient to help with furballs. the grooming is good but just do it as much as possible. i hopes this helps. Catalax is the answer i;m sure

I have a cat that looses so much hair I wonder how there is any left on her body!
My vet said excessive hair loss is an allergy to something in her food. We changed her food several times and she is now on a hypo-allergenic Medical dry kibble AND I bath her every 2 weeks with cat shampoo I purchased from Walmart and I only brush her before her bath. She took to bathing OK.
Now, it has been 6 months on the food and the bath and she is much better. I cant remember the last time she choked up a hair ball, my pillow isn't saturated in her hair AND she isn't grooming herself all the time!
Good luck!

One thing that I know that has helped my cats with their fur balls is Hartz Hairball Remedy, it's about a $2 tube at Walmart. My 10 year old cat likes to lick my other cats, so I think it really effects his digestive system. He ended up having an infected butt b/c I think it was too much for his system....I took him to the vet, got him antibiotics, and it still didn't cure his problem. Ever since I've been giving him the Hartz stuff, he has been healthy...who knew! As for the shedding, I'm not sure if there's a way to control it....maybe ask your vet. Good luck!

***Up above, someone said "vaseline"...that's what I tried first...just a little dab on my finger, and it seemed to help, but I don't know if tto much is bad...my cat liked it, though. And about the grass, if your cat is indoor....you can buy a kit to grow grass inside for your kitty.

I take it your cat is medium to long haired, all cats shed hair (Fur) the longer the hair the more problems with Furballs, regular grooming using a fine toothed comb is the answer too help prevent them but as he has them, Do you know if he has been trying to eat grass, roughage in the diet helps the balls bind in the stomach and so get passed away, but reduce his underbelly fur which is the finest by regular daily grooming.

You can't stop a cat from shedding. Some people have the groomer shave their cats - but they still shed just as much, and it stresses the cat out. Brush your cat thoroughly, everyday with a de-shedding comb (you can find one at a petstore). Also Petromalt has treats you can give her to prevent hairballs (I find it's hard to get my cat to eat the paste version of Petromalt). There are also hairball formula cat foods.
