"The drugs were found on Tuesday after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement tried to pull over a light-colored pickup, which sped off to the house, the agency said in news release. The driver ran away and wasn't immediately caught.

Officers found marijuana residues in the truck. They searched the home and found 5,533 pounds of marijuana."

So what are we talking about here, bales, like in a barn?

And how are we going to stop this sort of thing?

Since 2,000 pounds equals a ton, we are talking more than 2 and 1/2 tons of the stuff. I have no idea how much space that amount would require, but the house must have been stuffed with it. At least it didn't get on the street. How to stop it-vigilence by the immigration and custom officials seemed to work in this instance.

Let's put it this way. A good sized joint of decent pot would weigh about .7 to 1 gram and get three people stoned for a couple of hours if they only did it occasionally and didn't have a super tolerance.
It would also cost about $10 if bought in small quantities. Pot gets much more affordable the more you purchase at a time.
There is 28 grams in an ounce and 16 ounces in a pound that means 448 good sized joints to a pound. The above bust captured about 2.5 million such grams. At street level that's about 25 million dollars in theory. And yes pot isn't dense. An ounce would look substantial in a zip lock bag and a pound would fill more then a few.
To stop this sort of thing legalize it and worry about stuff that is important.

That's more than 2 1/2 tons.

Supply and demand. What we're doing isn't working because we're cutting down supply, and demand increases. The illegal behaviour is just getting more profitable, so it is increasing, too.

What needs to happen is not just education about marijuana, which ironically increases usage by making it into a way to rebell against... whatever, but treatment of those who are affected. The family members of habitual users.

They ARE users, whether or not the substance is considered addictive is not the point. Lives are being destroyed by it, and those lives need to be repaired before usage of the drug, yes drug, will decrease.

Your so funny Dar!

BUT......I do have a quick quip to this question. We have a police scanner and late last night as we were coming home a statewide (Texas) alert was aired for our county. A 1993 Grand Am blew through the border of Mexico/Laredo carrying a trunkful of Cocaine (how they knew this...I don't know) and apparently escaped Mexican police (hmm) and ALL the police between Laredo and here (Central Texas).

I had commented to my husband...so much for stopping the flow (for too much of anything)....... when you can't run down a 93 Grand Am...over 500 miles.

So at least in YOUR story they could actually STOP the vehicle and RECOVER the drugs.

5,533 lbs. , would relate to about 70 bales of hay. I don't think it can be stopped. It's a matter of supply and demand. It's estimated that 50% of the population, smoke at least a little on a regular basic. So, I don't imagine that 70 bales would supply one state for more than a day or two, if that.

2000 lbs is a ton so that's a lot of weed 2+tons.
Enforcement of our laws would be a good start.Perhaps make drug dealing a capital crime.Maybe that would deter a few if they knew they would get the death penalty.
I really don't know ,Ive never been exposed to that type of lifestyle where drugs were any part of my life.

stop it??!!NO way!

It is a lot. I don't know how much a bale weighs. But that guy is an *** for running right to where his people are. He gets whatever comes to him. I hope the 'improper authorities' get him (as opposed to the proper authorities)
