with a hiatus hernia you get reflux acid coming in to your oesophagus or food pipe and you can feel a burning sensation in your throat. The hiatus is a spyncter muscle at the top of your stomach that stops the acid coming up when it hernias or ruptures this happens.A stomach ulcer will give you a knawing pain in that region and you may feel a sensation in your throat like a sword being pushed into it

Hiatus hernia- Hiatus hernia or hiatal hernia is the protrusion (or hernia) of the upper part of the stomach into the thorax through a tear or weakness in the diaphragm.
In most patients, hiatus hernias cause no symptoms. Sometimes patients experience heartburn and regurgitation, when stomach acid refluxes back into the esophagus.
A peptic ulcer (stomach ulcer)is an ulcer of one of those areas of the gastrointestinal tract that are usually acidic.
Please see the webpages for more details and images on Hiatus hernia and Peptic ulcer.

As paul says.
An ulcer can be cured but a hiatus hernia is for keeps.
I've got the hh thing but a tablet every morning and I've no problems.
If you have to get the little camera into your stomach, it's no big deal.
An ulcer can be cured with a course of tablets.
You MIGHT have a bacteria called helicobacter which is very common and tablets see that off.
Whatever you have, it's nothing to lose sleep over.

The symptoms are usually quite different. A haitus hernia mainly causes pain in the oesophagus - somewhere behind the breastbone - because of acid reflux. Sometimes you get food or drink coming back up into the mouth. Peptic ulcers cause pain in the stomach.
There are other differences too but these are the main ones.

a hernia is when some of the abdominal contents come through the abdominal muscle wall. a pulled muscle is when you stretch some of the muscle and it hurts. the hernias that i have seen are usually visible. common places to get them are your groin, or scrotum if you are a man. there should be a little bulge there. DONT TRY TO PUSH IT BACK IN!! go to the doctor and they can tell you for sure.

Quite difficult if you have not been to the doctors. Symptoms for both are very similar so you need proof positive, before your doctor can prescribe medication, he will send you for either a barium meal xray or a camera down the throat.
Meantime lift head end of your bed with a couple of books this will prevent the acid coming back into your throat. Also try and stay off the fizzy drinks, rich food and alcoholic drink.
