That's what AA is for. You can't do it alone, that's for sure. If you could, you wouldn't be an alcoholic. Yes, you have to dump your drinking/using friends. They aren't real friends. Once you get clean and sober, they don't want to be around you anyway--except to try and talk you into to joining them again.

AA is the best place I know to hear the success and otherwise stories of alcoholics. For most it isn't a single victory but a day to day struggle in which yes sometimes you do have to leave some of your friends behind, and yes there are some lonely times. If you are not sure if AA is for you I would suggest listening to their over the air Broadcast in Cincinnati it is available every Monday at 3:00 P.M. on 88.7 WAIF it is also web cast over the Internet. Hi,I am an alcoholic and became one at the age of 13, my first taste of vodka was 8 years old, it was always in the house and my father is and grandmother was an alcoholic, so I just seen it as the right thing to do, My friends and I would party hard on weekends when I was young, and as I got older we would go for days, when I was 19 I would start to black out everytime I drank, awful things happened to me, I had a few boyfriends here and there for like 1-2 year time periods where I wouldnt drink or hang with friends because of the jealousy and abuse both phsyically and menatlly from them, after the breakups I would always find my way back to the friends, and we would go on month long binges, the longest I ever partied everyday was 3 months! Then one day I met a guy on the internet,so kind and caring we became friends and talked alot,he is Christian and always talked to me about God, the Bible, Jesus, he always encouraged me.And little by little I started to pray and read the Bible, I was still partying but slowly it started to feel wrong, and I would feel guilty each time, I ended up going to live with this guy in Los Angeles and he started bringing me to church! I gave it all the Jesus one day, and I have never felt better, I feel happy and free, I read alot of Chrisitan books to help me through rough times, I still struggle with the craving at times, when life is not going my way, but I have been doing good, I dont live near my friends anymore, so thats a good thing as well, I have found new friends at Church, in Bible study groups and stuff, I feel lonely at times but I get my book and read and it goes away. I am more happy now, I dont black out anymore, I dont make a fool of myself, waking up with unexplained bruises or pains, waking up with no pants on and noone around, those were really wake up calls for me, I would get in so many fights with men and women, so many missing purses, keys, Ids, jackets, I lost contact with family over my behavior, I am just so happy now, I feel safe. Life is to short to make a fool out of yourself and be sick in the mornings and to hurt your body that way, It feels better to be strong and healthy, to know what your doing,,I will suggest a Bible for you to look into for yourself or for whoever your concerned about it called,,,`"The Life Recovery Bible" its New Living Translation and Tyndale House Publishers, its very easy to read and understand and its what helped me through the start and it still helps me now..I would like to share one verse I like,,,""But those who wait on the Lord will find new strength, they will fly high on wings like eagles, they will run not grow weary, they will walk and not faint""(Isaiah 40:31),,,,always remember the Lord is forgiving and loves unconditionally,,,,,,I hope you the best in your road to recovery, If I did it you can do it!!!!
