I was wondering whether or not to use a house jack, and do you use a sledge hammer to tear out the existing wall; and do we need to shut off power to that room b4 getting started?

if the wall is a supporting wall you will need to support the ceiling some how .and yes turn off the power at least until you get the drywall off to see if there are electrical , water , or gas lines in there

make sure its not a load bearing wall or you will cause yourself some real problems
