I really want to get a flame tattoo from my wrist to my elbow. I have tattoos already and I know I won't regret it in that respect. The problem is that I will have to wear long sleeve shirts to work for the rest of my life. Do you think I should go through with it or not?

Do the Pro (for) and Con (against) process...
Pro - you may like the way it looks now and maybe it will make you feel cool and older - or what other reasons you may have. Realize that most of those reasons are emotional - you just want it, want to impress your friends, etc.
Con - this is a lifetime decision, and life is very long. Do you like the same things today that you liked a few years ago? Probably not. And this permamnent - if you don't like it in a few years, guess what? It's there. What if the girl you like later doesn't like tattoos? Did you know most employers look at people with tattoos as being immature and probably do not want them in better positions - and one reason is because they represent their company and don't them to look like that - sorry! It is just a fact of life. Don't you want the choice to wear short sleeves in the summer? Wouldn't having to hide it get real old?
Be honest and come with as many pros and cons as you can - and if the answer is no be strong enough to not do it.
I think if I were a young person I would get into the medical field of laser tattoo removal because it is going to be a big business in the future. As people grow up they see things differently and won't want them.

I have a tattoo that comes down past my elbow and i found it was a bit of a pain when i was working in a call centre over the summer. Luckily with the career I'm going into it looks better to have tattoos on show. I'm hoping to become a tattoo artist.
One thing that crossed my mind when i was reading through some of the other answers (i couldn't read them all, so sorry if i repeat myself) is that it wont bother you having to cover your ink for work for the 1st 10 years but think about 30 years time when you're still having to make sure you keep it covered. You might regret it by then, but then again, you might have changed your career to one where tattoos are acceptable.
Good luck with your decision, and remember, there's no rush.

Don't think of it that way. Maybe this particular job cares but another school won't. You only have to wear the long sleeved shirt in the building. It's not like you have to cover up on the street or in the car.

I know an editing assistant who had to cover her arm because of this and she was miserable in the summer but she didn't regret the tattoos, she just blamed the place she worked at. I'm not sure if I'd be able to handle it. I sweat enough as it is.

They do have that tattoo covering makeup. A friend of mine used it on his neck and face when he had to go to a wedding. He said it felt gross but worked, for the most part. You could use it on your wrist/lower arm area so that you could at least roll up your sleeve a bit on hot days. I don't know if it melts. You should look into something like that before you make your decision.

Well I would get the tattoo if you really really want it but I wouldn't go through with wearing long sleeves. I see all kinds of different people with tattoos and don't cover them up, like doctors, fast food employees, even lawyers. They can't just fire you for appearence because that would be discrimination. So many people have tattoos now and if employers don't hire people because of it, or fire people because of it, they will never have any employees. If it helps, I am a teacher and I have tattoos on my arms and I work with small children and their parents come in all the time to watch. I have never had anyone complain or take their student out of my class for it. I think it will be fine.

it depends on how long you plan on doing that job and whether you decide to choose a different career later thats even more professional. if thats the case then dont do it because having a job you want is way more important and beneficial. it also depends on the weather where you live. my state stays hot/warm almost all year around and practically never snows. i hate it because i have a tattoo on my ankle and have to wear pants to work everyday, but i love it when i go out in short stuff so i can show it off. so again, it depends on your future plans. my only problem is the hot weather with pants all year but i dont regret my tats for it. but you may get tired of the sleeves...unless you get a job where wearing suits are required. i can only imagine what those people have hidden under their clothes (:

If you want it done and wont regret it then have it done. The only time it may be an issue is summer when it is hot but then wear a thin shirt. At the end of the day its likely to be slightly visable through your shirt. Personally i can not see the harm in having tattoos and working with kids. It shows your an individual and you decorate your body how you see fit, its not like you are promoting illegal drugs but then I guess its the rules you have to stick by!
I say get it done and be proud!

I would say if it hinders you from performing your job no. Also take in account that for those really hot days you are stuck wearing a long sleeve shirt and if you wear a short sleeve how will your employer feel about it or even the kids that you teach

I had a chemistry in high school that had tattoos on his forearms and wasn't afraid to show them off in class. I don't know what the laws are in the state that you are in, but I'd go for it because if you really want to get it, go ahead. If you want to wear short sleeves to work, I'd think about getting a product that can cover up tattoos like a foundation makeup. They have products out now that can cover up tattoos. Go for it. You don't have to wear long sleeves for the rest of your life, because you can wear t-shirts on the weekends and on holidays and days you're not in school. Go for it.

tattoos are fine and its totally up to you. since you've had experience on tattoos before you totally know what you're going thru so good luck with everything. the long sleeved shirts part...why can't you wear tees? ok so you're an English teacher but the kids will definitely understand cuz so many ppl have tattoos these days. my friend is such a conservative person and she gets a million compliments on the tattoo she has on her breast. she really flaunts it and looks good, and compliments feel great! so good luck and happy tattooing!
