Depends on whether he is a close friend or just someone who you are aquainted with.
I have a very close friend who is an officer and I bought him a book on hunting and fishing - That's one of his big interests.
However if it were for someone you may not know well -- Then I would reccomend a donation to a local charity that helps victoms of domestic violence (we have the DOVE shelter here), done in his name and honor. Then send him a card letting him know.
Another good thing to consider is that police officers spend a lot time working -- You might try to give him something that is relaxing -- A theraputic back pillow for the police car seat, a foot bath/massager, a book that has nothing to do with crime.

If he is religious, there is a policeman's bible that is cool. Also' there is a great line of keepsakes from Ardleigh Elliot. It is a police officer collection box series.

You can always get him a giftcard from a law enforcement shop , "galls", or you can buy him a nice knife or something that would make there job easier like Night Vision Goggles.

"no pig jokes" hahaha! i like that, seriously - a new gun cleaning kit? some cool replacement pistol grips? Do they have to pay for their own uniforms to get cleaned? you could pre-pay for that or a gift certificate. New boots? I dunno - i'm just throwing ideas out there...
