"Who lost the US midterm elections? The party of George W. Bush, of course. Who won? The party of George H.W. Bush, his father, a traditional Republican. Neo-conservative Republicans lost; conservative Republicans – who call themselves Democrats now – won. Let me explain....."

"Almost all the seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate that the Republicans lost were won by conservative, not liberal, Democrats The Democrat who won the Pennsylvania senate seat, for instance, opposes abortion. All the three Democrats who picked up seats in Indiana, a heartland state, are social conservatives. The Democrat who won the Ohio senate seat was a Yale-educated labour activist, an anti-free trade and anti-immigration Democrat. The Democrats picked up all these seats precisely because they fielded candidates who were unlike the national party.
Ironically, this election has produced a more conservative Republican party in Congress, for many moderate Republicans lost their seats. But it also produced a more conservative Democratic party, for most of the Democrats who picked up seats at the expense of the Republicans are social and fiscal conservatives. Bush Republicans lost; but they weren’t replaced by Clinton Democrats. "
