if it is for a gift, try a 2002 pine ridge cabernet from the stag's leap district. it drinks very well now. will set you back around $65 for the bottle.

if it is to be consumed at thansgiving, try a chardonnay from far niente. will set you back around $35 for the bottle.

if that's not good enough for you...

1. 2001 duckhorn cabernet (if you can find it)
2. 2002 frog's leap cabernet (if you can find it)
3. 2001 robert mondavi reserve cabernet

each of those will be over $100 per bottle.

Georges DuBouef Beaujolais Nouveux, which goes on sale the third Thursday of November each year. It's an easy-to-drink, inexpensive red that goes with the wide range of flavors on a Thanksgiving table. Plus, the bottles are always very festive and make a nice display as a gift. Because of the timing of it going on sale each year, the price, the package and the flavor, it is a very traditional choice to bring to someones house over the holidays.

Second choice would be any champagne or other sparkling wine in your budget - they go with everything and have that holiday party spirit to them

Trimbach Riesling for a white, Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages for a red, Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau if you want to get the new release the week of Thanksgiving.

These are all classic pairings with Thanksgiving dinner but the first two would cellar nicely if she chooses not to serve them (the riesling must be well-chilled anyway) and the Nouveau is classic Thanksgiving dinner gift as it's not released until the week before the holiday.

Raylen Category 5 is incredible! As quoted from the website:

"The intensity of hurricanes in the Carolinas reflects the power and structure of this premium RayLen wine. Primarily vinted from Cabernet Sauvignon, with blending of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Syrah, this ripe and intense Cabernet blend steps up to a Category 5."

I think a bottle generally retails from 16-18 dollars.

Can't go wrong with the suggestions by 'thegirlwholovesbrains'.
I would a Sparkling Shiraz from Australia to the suggestion box. The sommelier I work suggested a Barossa Valley Estate - E & E Sparkling Shiraz to me. It was wonderful. Great flavour paired beautifully with turkey and stood up to the intense flavours of the side dishes. Stuffing candied yams etc.

Oliver winery in Bloomington, IN makes a great soft red and white for people who like it to be a little more on the sweet side--it's not too sweet though. You can find it most anywhere wine is sold. Another brand I love is Yellow Tail, their wines are great too...but more for a person who is accustomed to drinking wine.

I highly recommend Cake Bread Chardonnay. Very tasty. Or if you want to bring a red - go for any of the Stag's Leap. Either of these will be a major hit.

A nice red for $6 a bottle is Renee' Barbier (Spanish). I drink a lot of wine and this one is exceptional for the price! (Matches up to MUCH more expensive bottles).

You can get it at World Market.

You cannot go wrong if you bring a good sparkling wine.

I would suggest a white wine that is neither too dry or too sweet. Almost any German wine would be a good choice.
