I just had surgery last week for a palianital cyst I've had for 4 yrs. Has anyone had the same thing? It is pretty painful and I want to make sure I am doing everything right.

This is a pretty painful surgery, a pilonidal cyst is very common most just deal with it and keep dealing with it, not knowing how much better it is to remove it once and for all. We recommend to our patients to do sitz baths or shower 3-4 times a day after surgery until it is healed which can take weeks. Also we recommend keeping it clean, dry and covered when not showering or bathing. We usually give our patients 4x4 gauze to cover it with, if you don't have this or can't afford to keep buying it we recommend that they use Viva paper-towel because it has great absorbency. Be sure to follow up with your surgeon.

Make sure to keep it clean and free from infection.

This might sound strange, but try to have a positive attitude toward the healing process. My bf also had the same operation, and it made him angry how the wound kept him from his normal tasks and made every move painful. And the wound was constantly infected and wouldn't heal. But as soon as he came to terms with it and accepted the fact that the wound wouldn't heal within a few weeks, it eventually started healing out faster and stopped being infected all the time.
I also didn't use to believe in that sort of thing and neither did he, but now he's convinced that keeping a positive attitude really helps.

My Husband Had the Same Surgery three years ago and it was very pain full for him for the first six months. However as time went by it go better. Did they pack the incision or did they sew it up that makes a difference on the healing process.

Just keep it scrupulously clean and do what the Dr. told you. It should heal just fine, but it takes time.
