I'm bipolar and have been off meds for a year now since I found out that I was pregnant. But now I'm noticing a lot of mood swings and some self harm thoughts coming back after being away for a little more than a year and a half. What should I do? I know that meds are best but I hate taking meds I've been doin it since I was 13 years old and I'm 25 now...What do I do?

I've been on meds as long as you. Since I was 13 and I'm 25 now. I just quit them. I know I wasn't supposed to but I hated being medicated. One day I thought, "No matter how bad my life is, I will live at least for my kids." I could never feel ok knowing someone else was raising them. I sort of "came to" after years of wanting to die. I am still messed up mentally, but I stopped the suicide attempts & wishing to die. I saw a show on kids & what happens when they go to orphaniges. It was horrible. That was about a month ago & I've been "suicide attempt free" since. You have to make a decision. And you have to reach a certain point within yourself. I'm sure you can't just do this if you aren't ready.

Best wishes.

You must get back on your meds, they are there for a reason. If you are seeing the mood swings, you know that the meds were doing something to help you. Too many people with bipolar go off their medication and find themselves in big trouble. You don't want that, so go back on them or at least discuss this thoroughly with your psychiatrist.

I have bipolar too. I am about to be medicated. I, do not know how it feels to be you and to have been on meds for so long but I just know that for me I want to live a normal life. I hate feeling as I do when I have episodes. So I would rather take meds my whole life if I have to.
If the meds interfered with you being really 'you' why not ask doc to change them.
I recommend you go back on them for your sake and your loved ones especially your children. I grew up with a father that is probably bipolar and had terrible temper outbursts in his mood swings. It was a nightmare to live with and he hurt us all really badly. I would not want to do that to my babies.

My mom is bipolar... and she unintentional runs everyone off that cares about her (she stopped taking meds too). I can only handle being around her for limited time. Coming from a daughters point of view I would rather her take the meds, it evens out her moods and she is easier to deal with.

It sounds like, despite some symptoms returning, you still wonder if you can go without the medication. It feels like forever that you've taken them, and maybe that's a real bother to you. I would be very cautious. Relapse can happen, and suddenly. Speak with your GP if you find sideeffects particularly unpleasant, and speak with him or her as a matter of urgency should your thoughts of self harm, or of suicide, become more and more pressing.

You need to see your therapist. You do have a therapist, right? Meds can only do so much even when you DO take them.

Are you breast feeding? Is that why you are still off your meds?
