My bf and I will be driving from AZ to PA at the end of the month. We'll be driving through Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Virginia...etc...sticking to Interstates for the most part.
How's the weather this time of year in these locations? More specifically, how are the Smoky Mtns. around Knoxville? Do you think I'll have to deal with much ice or snow? Should I try to stay as far south as possible for as long as possible?
We're trying to make the trip in 4 days or less...

We're making this trip because we're moving...so we have to go at this time! I don't have my mind set on any particular route...I just want to get there as easily as possible. I'm looking for heads-up on any spots to avoid.

I do alot of traveling all over, but most often is going from pittsburgh pa to visit family in charleston sc. The mountains can be troublesome sometimes in the winter, but dont worry too much. I have been in some pretty heavy weather in the mountains of VA, WVA, NC and so on, but as long as you take a few basic and common sense precautions, it wont be a problem. First and foremost, make sure you have good tread on your tires! Check your antifreeze and wiper blades and make sure you have plenty of washer fluid. Of course keep blankets in the car and some food and water, but thats good sense on any trip. Get a bag of either roadsalt or something like sand or kittylitter incase you get stuck somewhere for traction. and most autoparts stores sell little folding shovels incase your wheels spin somwhere and you need to dig out. If you are on the interstate, it is usally very well maintained so you wont have much to worry about. I would suggest picking up a cheap CB radio. If you have any questions about what lays ahead, the truckers will know. they are a great asset to travelers, always respect them on the road. And i wouldent suggest trying to stay south for longer. thats just gonna make your trip take way longer, waste gas, and you will still have to head north at some point. most of all, enjoy the trip! stop at some interesting places on the way and make it an adventure rather than a chore. dont worry, you will be fine

Staying south as long as you can is a good idea, but since you plan to see the mountains in Virginia you can run into snow and from there northward snow is very likely. Unless you are very experienced at driving in the snow I would not suggest it at that time of the year. Having trucked from Maine to Tennessee I know the route you most likely be taking. May or early June would be much better and you will be able to see the trees and bushes in bloom. Another good time would be mid to late October for the color of the leaves in the fall.
Have a happy and safe trip when ever you go.

Warning the 140 interstate and route 66 get closed for hours in the winter due to snow and ice (through AZ and NM), so be prepared take snacks & blankets.
